Barrie Flyers had beautiful working rela tionship Many former Flyers headed northwest to help Coll ingwood in their first year in the Intermediate league That was last year This year with the two teams both set to compete in the Georgian Bay Intermediate league they are anything but friends THEIR PROPERTY The reason the romance has come to an end is that the Shipbuilders have stopped the Flyers from signing Ken Knapton Bob Baird and Terry Agnew Those three players played for the Shipbuilders last year and are according to league bylaws their property until January 10 1980 Knapton Baird and Agnew all played for the Barrie Flyers until they went to Coll ingwood last year Flyer owner Gord Coates said he had an agreement from Shipbuilder coach Darryl Sly also former Flyer say ing those players could return to Barrie if they chose Baird and Knapton have been working out with the Flyers throughout the preseason and have signed cards Agnew was set to join the club and also sign RECEIVED LETTER However last Tuesday Coates received letter from Shipbuilder general manager to two Any combination of Pittsburgh victories and Expos defeats totalling two will clinch the pennant for the Pirates All we can do is keep battl ing them added Williams Now we need help from Chicago Cubs and were runn ing short of games Ironically the Expos suc cumbed to Philadelphia main ly because of costly error by third baseman Larry Parrish the man destined to become the teams mat valuable player this season With 40303 fans bringing the Expos attendance mark over million for the first time in the clubs 11year history settling in for marathon Parish let grounder by Greg Gross skip through his legs with two out in thellth When left fielder Warren Cromartie fielded the ball the overthrow slugger Mike Schmidt jumped on fastball from starter David Palmer to crash his 15th home run of the season and tworun shot that knotted the count at 22 in the sixth The Expos left baserunners in scoring position with less than two out in both the sixth and 10th innings to support Cromarties claim that the club may have been pressing feel like let everyone down said veteran Tony Perez who ended the 10th inning threat by striking out against reliever Ron Reed 1343 But thats the way it goes somtimes Were not out of this yet The Pirates could lose tomorrow and were right back in the race argue with Collingwood Joe Sheffer which stated that his club was not giving the players their releases and they were expected to be back in Collingwood this year The letter from Sheffer stated the Flyers should please disregard any implied permission from personts not to allow this to occur That is allow the three players to play for Barrie Sheffer says Sly was not in position to agree to release the three players Darryl is in no position to allow those players to be released Sheffer told The Examiner am the person in charge of releases and Ive never been contacted by anyone in the Flyer ex ecutive Coates has different inter pretation He says that the Flyers signing of Les Burgess has led to the Collingwoods sudden change of heart Burgess has played tor the Flyers the past three years and has been their leading scorer for the last two However he lives in Wasaga Beach and the Shipbuilders thought he was going to play with them this year The Flyers signed Burgess on Sunday and Coates received the letter from Sheffer on Tuesday The Burgess signing had nothing to do with our stopp ing Agnew Knapton and Baird from playing with the Flyers Sheffer said It is just situation that came up at the sametime Coates says that Sly is the major man in the Collingwood operation and it is he who has decided to stop Knapton Baird and Agnew from playing in Barrie as revenge for the Burgess signing The Examiner tried unsuc cessfully to get in touch with Sly The fact remains that Knap ton and Baird have been with the Flyers since September 15 and the Shipbuilders chose to do nothing about it until after Burgess was signed on September 23 Knapton Baird and Agnew are all Barrie residents and all want to play in their home town told Darryl over the sum mer that wanted to return to Barrie Knapton said He said it was fine with him and that Collingwood would not stand in my way Knapton received letter from Sheffer Wednesday which stated he could no longer skate with the Flyers After got the letter phoned Darryl and asked him what the hell was going on Knapton said He said it was out of his hands and the executive had made the deci sion dont need all this crap the
