Jack Liberty owner of Barrie Enterprises and Protection Systems displays the heat and smoke detectors he distributes Examiner Photo Young health service company the examiner Friday Sept 28 1979 By LORI COHEN Of The Examiner The girls face is horribly disfigured the obvious result of near fatal burns Shes in magazine called America Burn ing very popular among doortodoor salesmen of smoke and heat detectors Arrnzd with magazines like that films about the horrors of fire in the home and statistics that would alarm even the calmest individual these salesmen generally have no trouble convincing homeowners especially parents of the need for earlywarning systems But recent publicity about distributors selling far too many overpriced detectors then disappearing with no forwarding address is having an adverse affect on business local distributor says Jack Liberty operator of Barrie Enterprises and Protection Systems distributor of Ultraguard smoke and heat detec tors says he had 17 appointment cancellations after articles that appeared in two Toronto newspapers recently The articles said many homeowners bought overpriced detectors and warned consumers to be cautious when dealing with doortodoor solicitors HIGH QUALITY Liberty says the bad press was caused by an irreputable company that sold shoddy goods putting others in bad light Hes convinced the detectors he sells are of high quali ty and besides whats money when it comes to saving lives he says know our stuff is good he says Its been on the market for 10 years Liberty sells photoelectric smoke detectors with battery backup system and heat detectors with motor that runs on ly when the alarm is set off The price is $115 apiece in cluding installation The ministry of consumer and commer cial relation says prices in Ontario range from $25 to $40 without installation Liberty admits his product is not cheap but insists its worth the pric It can turn into large investment when the company recommends smoke detector in every sleeping area and heat detectors near all major appliances We never sell just one Liberty says The Ontario building code uires one or more ionization type smoke detectors installed tween the sleeping and liv ing areas on the ceiling in every new house and the ministry recommends at least one detector per house Liberty doesnt sell ionizationtype detectors and doesnt recommend them They operate using small amount of radioactive material contained in capsule to allow air inside the unit to conduct electricity small current passes through the ionized air and when smoke enters the flow of the current is impeded and the alarm goes off Tests have shown that ionized models dont detect slow buming fires as fast as the photoelectric models which use light sensitive photoelectric cell and light source When smoke enters the unit the light beam is scattered and deflected to the cell setting off the alarm The problem with ionizaton models seems to be what to do with them after theyre no longer in use At one point old ionization detectors could not be thrown out with the trash New waste treatment plant at Molsons to save energy because of the radioactive material inside but had to be returned to the manufacturer That regulation seemed to have lapsed Liberty predicts these models will soon be off the market For now the ministry advises consumers to be sure any smoke or heat detector purchased has passed the Under writers Laboratories of Canada tests GET BACK BUSINESS In the meantime Liberty is concentrating on gaining back the business he lost by conducting rigorous tergghone and doortodoor sales campaigns then letting his not speak for itself He is absolutely opposed to highpressure sales tac tics and says his employees are fired if they use them We let them the customers decide what they can af ford he said And if while hes trying to sell his film and book can im press upon people the ril of living without heat or smoke detector hes convin everyone will benefit offers terminally care By NANCY FIGUEROA Of The Examiner In February following six months of research Paramedix Health Service unique to Simcoe County was founded Today the company run by James and Krista Moxon of Shanty Bay is very much on its feet Paramedix explains Moxon is not in competition with governmentrun home care programs or with the Vic torian Order of Nurses VON but acts as an extension of those services The company started from scartch but now gets referalls via word of mouth or on occasion from Royal Vic toria Hospital and other counlt ty hospitals said Moxon Eventually the Moxons hope to franchise Paramedix in all rural areas across Ontario Paramedix is of assistance to those terminally ill patients who are visited by the VON but require additional service such as night duty As well it services patients whose home care benefits have expired but who still require nursing services says Moxon NURSE SERVICE Patients are serviced by one of Paramedix roster of registered nurses registered nursing assistants or homemakers Dollars and Sense Pay cash for house By RALPH ALEXANDER Dear Sir have recently purchased house and we take posses sion and close the deal very soon From personal savings and an inheritance am in position to pay cash for the house and had planned to do so However now am wondering if shouldnt arrange mortgage of $50000 or so in order to take advantage of the new taxdeductible mortgage interest plan currently earn about $22000 per year and can use all the tax deductions can get Dear There are number of reasons why it would be to your advantage to pay cash for our house rather than arrange mortgage to take advantage of the recently announced assistance to homeowner with mortgage Firstly the program must be passed by the federal parliament before it can take effect While the opposition parties are no more likely to vote against this popular goodie than against motherhood or maple syrup they potentially could force substantial changes in the plan which would reduce the benefits for middle and upper in come taxpayers CREDIT AGAINST TAX As proposed the plan would allow credit against federal income tax payable of 25 per cent of mortgage in terst paid to maximum credit of $1250 However this maximum credit would not be available until 1982 being phased in over fouryear period beginning with the 1979 taxation year Therefore for the first three yeas of your mortgage you would not be getting the full tax credit As noted the program is tax credit rather than tax deduction If you take out mortgage and invest your $50000 cash the interest earned will be taxed at your in come level at about 37 per cent Against that you will eventually get tax credit of 25 per cent of the mortgage interest paid In your situation this cannot be to your ad vantage In addition if you lend your 350000 to trust company for five years via Guaranteed Investment Certificatei you will earn about 111 per cent Your mor tgage interest rate Would be at lest 12 per cent for loss of $500 year Actually it has always been possible to arrange tax deductible mortgage provided you have the cash to pay for your house in the first place This is because the tax deductibility or otherwise of interest is determined by the use made of the money and not the security given for the loan Therefore if you pay cash for your house and subsequently arrange mortgage to free up the capital Nurses are not hired on permanent basis but are call ed as their services are re quired For many nurses this system is handy says Mrs Moxon Paramedix is great for nurse who is trying to raise family and doesnt want full time work she says They get to call their own shots All nurses answer to the pa tients attending physician and all nurses are bonded and in sured for malpractice says Moxon Nurses nursing assistants and homemakers are available 24 hours day seven days week Some patients requ1re nursing services for only one day some for much longer Many of the patients are ter minally ill and want to come 11 home to die says Mrs Mox ton Often they are too much work for their families The assistanceof the nursr can help the family live normal lyshesavs Patients pay for the ser vices In some instances however patients are eligible for social assistance while in other cases an extended health care insurance plan may cover the service As well as for individual pa tients Paramedix will supply relief staff for hospitals rest homes senior citizens homes nursing homes physicians of fices and industries Often older people alone in the county dont realize their insurance will cover Paramedix services says Moxon James and Krista Moxon are the operators of Paramedix Health Services Paramedix unique to Simcoe County
