organic Dear Ann Landers am writing ut the wife who com plained that her husband they had married 22 years could not remember his phone number his age or address When they went shopping he had to ask her what size shoe he wore same for shirts and socks He couldnt tie bow and had never written cheque even though they had had joint account for 20 years He didnt know how The wife was disgusted and wanted to know what you thought of such stupidity Ann your response was extremely perce tive You said it might be something other than stupi ity perhaps an organic problem You suggested that he be tested The symptoms she described are identical with senile de mentia There are approximately one and onehalf million cases in the United States 500000 of them serious Nearly 100000 people die from it annually yet it rarely appears on death certificate Only recently have researchers begun to explore the dis turbances in brain chemistry correlated with senile dementia The results are very promising Please continue to urge readers who see these symptoms in parents or mates to insist on neurological examination It would be lifesaving BGE Dear BGE Thank you for the alert The next letter on the same subject may be of interest although it is ap parent that the husband under attack has another kind of problem Dear Ann Landers Why do you always protect the men You suggested there might be something organically wrong when the wife said her husband couldnt tie bow couldnt remember his shoe size shirt size or where he parked his car say Applesauce My husband knows how to unscrew the top of tube of toothpaste turn on light open drawer and find his socks and shorts but he never learned how to put the top back on turn light off or close drawer The man has spent fortune on yard equipment because when he finishes using mower or shrub clipper he leaves it outside and someone walks off with it For years tried to break him of his sloppy habits but it was utterly useless Fi nally made up my mind that he was hopeless case It was lot easier on my nervous system to accept him as he is and do things for him which is whats been going on for good many years You know whose fault this is dont you Please say it sol wont have to Am Betty Dear Betty OK Ill say it for you his mother Dear Ann Landers am man in my 405 with somewhat personal problem like to wear shorts to the beach but my legs look like an apes dont have any hair on my chest or back and very little on my arms Ive seen people nudge one another and laugh Youngsters have come right out and asked how come have such hairy legs Other men must have this problem How do they cope with it Is shaving or hair remover the answer Tallahassee Dear Tat Since you have no hair on you arms or chest you would probably be less conspicuous if you removed the apelike growth from your legs say go ahead and do it Consumers Advocate Should return ff pop bottles My little boy took some pop bottles back to the corner store for refund of the premiums but they wouldnt give it to him went down and asked the manager why he had refused to do this and he told me long story about them be ing too dirty not the type he carried and too many bottles had been offered Are there set regulations about refundable pop bottles Yes there are and they come under the Environmental Protection Act Many consumer groups who were concerned about the dangers of glass pop bottles littering the parks sidewalks and roads fought long battle to have protective regulations enacted and now we must comply with them always remembering to consider especially the small store In fact the largest hurdle consumers had to jump over was the understandable resistance of small shopkeepers having to store large numbers of bottles Returnable pop bottles must be reasonably clean and never more than 48 can be returned to one store at one time Also the store to which the refundable bottles are taken must carry the brands consumers return This is often forgotten During hot summer days soft carbonated drinks are quickly consumed but think it is only fair that con sumers buy fresh bottles of pop from the convenience stores with the minimum number of refundable bottles Consumers are encouraggd to pick up any bottles they see laying about outside and the children of course should still be encouraged to collect refundable pop bottles from those who do not bother to regain their premiums but they must abide by the regulations as stated above Consumers who have 15 litre pop bottles may still return them to the stores and obtain the 40 cents refundable premium paid although they are now banned because of the hazards caused through exploding glass It has been reported many times that some small stores will not refund in cash to children but insist that they buy gum or candy instead for the appropriate amount From nutritional standpoint wise parents do not approve of this and being against the regulations those stores which do this should be reported to the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations Business Practices Division 555 yonge St Toronto Pollys Pointers Removing iodine stains DEAR POLLY Is there anything can use to remove iodine stains from anSWers many identical Three of the most unusual remedies came from Hawaii Ann said neighbors cat slept on top of her convertible until she started covering the top with old wet not dripping bath towels and disccovered cats do not like to sleep on anything wet Mary sprinkles black pepper on top of her car and George says cats will not even come close to his car since he started sprinkling curry powder on it DEAR POLLY have better way for removing paint from wall switch and receptacle plates Remove the screws from the wall plates and then soak the lates in hot water with any detergent
