College theatre is first stop for touring truckers musical 18 Wheels the country and western musical thats been staged across Canada opens mity tour Tuesday with onenight stop at the Georgian College Theatre When 18 Wheels first opened at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto the Globe and Mails drama critic summed it up this way The titles 18 wheels refer to the flatnosed giants that barrel along our highways and the show is about trucks truckers CB radios country music and nearly every related area But if that sounds little out of your line just forget it is about trucks After the first five minutes you wont care much why you came The play owes its beginnings to Booth Savage Toronto actor who suggested that show about truckers would be interesting Theatre Passe Muraille sent Savage on the road to research the project he crossed the country with truckers and picked up valuable stories about the trucking scene The musical came together when composermusician John Gray became involved thought was nice idea says Gray It was unique subject Gray who later went on to write another hit musical Billy Bishop Goes to War took control of the project and began shaping the show and writing the songs soaked up trucker lore says Gray read magazine articles and tried to get an understanding of what its like to be trucker Of course some aspects of the job are very bor ing and left those things out of the show Gray wrote 16 songs to accompany 18 Wheels The show covers many aspects of longdistance trucking the greasy spoons the camaraderie of the road CB radio chatter the stretches of endless highway and the horror of big snowstorm The touring version of 18 Wheels that the Barrie audience wrll see is the same as the Tarragon Theatre production that played in Toronto last fall
