RoIIr skiing hottei ne fd the examiner7 EEiEaVLSept 19 is Disco music with its rhythmic pulsating beat and flashing lights has been the key element to the resurgence of roller skating as lad Those who have sufficient technique actually dance while they skate Examiner Photo Heck on wheels By MARY DELANEY Of The Examiner It may never replace biking or foot power as the fastest and most fun method of travel for the young but its already replaced the pinball arcade and the pool hall as the fave teenage hangout in Barrie Its the roller rink carpeted and classy with flashing lights and disco in stereo No longer the cement floor wooden boards and scratchy Skaters Waltz sounding like its being broadcast through sock No longer the hangout of the tough guys cigarette hanging from the lower lip and mickey stash ti in the back pocket Todays roller rink is clean its respectable and its fun For adults and kids alike the prime purpose is cheap recrea tional exercise and good time Its more sociable than jogging cheaper than skiing and avail ble all year round unlike other new sports such as wind surfing You dont need any particular skill age is no bar rier and the rink is readily ac cessible by foot bike or car IIllElERATI For the kids the high school hunch that makes up most of the crowd especially on week nights there is an added appeal to the roller rink the ageold appeal of the meeting place The boys come to meet the girls and the girls come to meet the boys Roundabout Roller Rink on Bell FArm Road is Barries first modern roller palace Half an hour before it opens on week nights the high school kids are already lining up The regulars and there are many know each other by name They come as often as they can every night if Diane Hughes doesnt let work get in the way of fun she wears her skates behind the counter at the skate rental shop Examiner Photo possible They own their own skates slung over their shoulders and talk knowledgeany and touch cockin about the make and cost and accuracy of their skating machines They may not have motorbike or hot rod but they have set of wheels that probably cost them close to $100 Disco skates are not as ex pensive as regular skates but they have style all their own At $85 these skates are primari ly for fun Theyre sort of sneaker with wheels coming in variety of colored suede with stripes Regular skates average about $100 Theyre leather like an ice skate and come above the ankle For the really serious skaters the pro shop in Roun dabout sells skates up to $47450 plus tax The wheels alone run up to $140 for set of eight And yes there are skaters at Roundabout who use $500 skates Among the the son and daughter of the owners MOMS AN ICE SKATER It all started for the owners of the Roundabout back in the fif ties Barb Bassett was dance and figure skater on ice Doug Bassett was sidewalk roller skater After their marriage they united their hobbies and started going to the Terrace roller rink in Toronto where they lived In 1967 Doug gave up the dry cleaning business he had been involved with for 15 years and shortly afterwards the husband and wife team opened their first Roundabout in Hamilton When the 10 year lease drew to an end Roundabout which had been the only roller rink in Hamilton in 68 had three com petitors in 10 mile radius And so the Bassetts looked for new location They chose Barrie Doug was originally from Barrie After research into the existing recreational facilities such as pools bowlin alleys and theatres he deci ed that his old home town was the perfect site to launch new Roundabout He was right Since it opened in June the Roundabout has become the place to be and be seen for the teeny bopper and the high school set But it also remains popular with the faithful who attended the first Roundabout in Hamilton Many of them still come to the club now that its in Barrie to continue their lessons Two of the best Sharon West of Hamilton and her partner Jim Krouch of Whitby leave Sun day to compete in Greece for the world championships hav ing already placed second in the world team trials Doug and Barb are hopeful that their own two children will be on the first ever Canadian team to compete in the Olym pics as roller skaters The sport is scheduled to be introduced at next years Olympics in Moscow as an exhibition sport Susan 13 and David 16 already hold the 197778 na tional title for under 15 Dance Champions On top of that David won his division as solo at the national level for the past two years while Susan this year came second And what about Doug and Barb has owning and manag ing roller rink dampened their enthusiasm Far from it Their skates are always handy and they maange to lace them up for at least one waltz every night No doubt about it its definitely more fun than dry cleaning The family that skates together stays together might be the motto of the Bassett family owners of Roundabout Roller Rink Doug and Barb started roller skating together in the early years of their marriage at the Terrace in Toronto They have weekend notes from around the county Flea markets Grace United Church will hold flea markets during every Saturday in kill his father and me ever since he was five He makes these threats when he doesnt get his way or if he is punished for some wrongdoing It doesnt happen very often and seems to come in spurts For months he will behave fairly well then suddenly he will become belligerent and say such things as Im going to kill you He will then go into detail and describe how For example Ill take the butcher knife and stick it into your stomach Or Ill get gun and shoot you in the head Would you say its stage all children go through or does this suggest deepseated problem that needs looking into Concerned In Idaho Dear Idaho child of any age who threatens murder should not be ignored Your sons anger and hostility need to beinvestigated recommend family counselling at the earliest possible moment also suggest that you keep all the knives in locked drawer and if you have gun in the house it should be wellhidden also under lock and key Dear Ami Landers Our landlady is genius at manufacturing excuses to get into our apartment to look around She usually comes when we are at work The man in the next apartment has seen her Twice within the last three weeks she has been here to inspect the gas stove and smoke alarm The woman has key to which she is entitled by law but she knocks once then tries to let herself in We keep the chain on because we arent always dressed ready to receive guests The chain has prevented some embarrassing mo ments What can be done to curtail her snooping and the alltoo frequent dropin visits Lnverne And Shirley Dear and Look at your lease What does it say If it doesnt have entrance by the owner spelled out it should Write the little old lady letter Tell her you ap preciate her concern for your comfort and security but youd like some notice before she drops up attractive food displays and am not talking about cafeterias Recently we practically killed ourselves putting together gorgeous table Unbelievable care went into the selection of topgrade vegetables and fruits It was magnificently artistic and we were truly proud woman sashayed up to the salad bar tore the celery right out of the centrepiece ripped off several stalks threw them helterskelter on top of the radish roses and placed the heart of the celery on her own plate She then speared several avocado halves in search of the ones she wanted By the time she left the vegetable table looked like garbage dump leave it to you Aim Is she slob Appalch In Pa Dear Appalled For want of better word Id say yes shes slob How do you feel Better hope so Erma Bombeck CanTseH hveddnlook have friend who has been trying to sell her house for six months and frankly Im worried about her The other morning while having coffee excused myself to use her bathroom She threw llCI body across the door and said Do you really have to use this mean you couldnt wait and stop at the service station on the way home could you Get hold of yourself Gloria said Ever since you listed your home youve developed clean fet ish Are you finished leaning back on that pillow she asked grabbing it and punching it up with her fist See what mean Youre going crazy with neatncss What happench We never see newspaper at your door anymore We never see garbage cans at your curb almost hate to ask but where are your children laundered and stored them until after we move she said grabbing the cup and saucer away from my lips and rinsing them under the faucet Face it No one buys house that looks likeits inhabited Thats dumb thing to say Its true Take your average model home The light switches might not work the walls smell like paste there is no water and the doors are hung backwards No problem The house will still sell But if the lids are up on the bathroom commode forget it Idontbelievetliatatall Its true Take this house Please It was model home when we bought it Im here to tell you virgin house is the most beautiful sight in the world There was even bowl of waxed fruit on the coffee table Then we moved in First it was basketball in the foyer handprints around the light switches cardboard box in the untility room to hold the dog cup dispensers on every wall calendar over the stove notes on the refrigerator an ironing board in the dining room boot in the flower bed rolledup newspapers in the spouting 50pound bag of fertilizer on the porch bread card in the window And the waxed fruit Its still in the bowl with initials carved into it along with brush roller two marbles and transistor battery The illusion is gone Just then the realtor came up the drive with prospective couple Quick yelled Gloria grabbing her sweater Put the coffee pot in the oven the mail in thc freezer and follow me to the basement Just pray they dont slip on the driveway waited it yesterday Centre Bruiser the
