eA the examiner Friday Sept 14 1979 the book page Citizens chemical guide tells real horror story By MARLENE ORTON The Canadian Press Good bedtime reading its not citizens guide to Con troversial Chemicals is instead reallife horror story about some of the poisons that are part of our environment in some of the places we work and in other cases part of our diets The book basically sum mary of newspaper accounts and detailed science reports unnerves those already con vinced that chemicals and addi tives are bad news And it might help others un derstand why researchers con tinue to find new cancer links with so many chemicals com mon to daily life Yet the authors group of science and journalism students at Carleton University in Ottawa do not point out quickly enough that number of the chemicals discussed have been banned in Canada and why some others still are used The use of nitrites for curing meats for example has been the subject of much con troversy among health researchers particularly in the United States CANCER AGENT At least one study has shown Prairie history wastes good plot By JR DUPUIS CP Business Editor Author Pierre Berton proved that Canadian history need not be dull Unfortunately little of his slickness seems to have had any impact on the writings of academics Too bad recent example is book titled Prairie Capital ism joint effort by two pro fessors John Richards an eco nomics teacher at Simon Fraser University and Larry Pratt of University of Albertas political science department Canadians may recall Pratt as the author of The Tar Sands Syncrude and the Politics of Oil which became the subject of controversial CBC TV drama While it would be unfair to expect Richards and Pratt to match the popular prose of Ber tons National Dream they squandered away good title and super plot Prairie Capitalism chronicles the rise of sleepy Saskatchewan and Alberta to power broker status in Canada but the writing is stolid and without flair The book is peppered with words like dirigisme arriviste reductionism and eggregious all guaranteed to numb even thhe most avid mind Yet the ingredients of good reading are there as the au thors painstakingly examine the political and social upheavals that changed the west from the grand colorful days of Social Credit to the oil boom and the arrival of bbaron lords like Premiers Lougheed Closed Mon HIT THE WHEELS Fri Set Evenings Double Sessions First Session 100 930 Second Session 1000 midnight to years siege over Sat Sun Matinee 130 pm of Alberta and Blakeney of Saskatchewan FASCINATING FLASHES In between there are frequently fascinating vignettes of such legendary western shakers as Woodrow Lloyd Ernest Manning Tommy Douglas and Ross Thatcher Interviews with Lloyds widow provided the authors with much of the saga of this fiercely dedicated politician Prairie Capitalism is story of bloated grandeur of what can happen when benign states Alberta and Saskatchewan suddenly find themselves Arab rich with newfound resources the world wants The new status is best under stood in the election of Loug heed whose power comes from metropolitan interests not ru ral The book is chronicle of movement from regional capitalism to play in high in ternational stakes Clearly the book shows that Alberta and Saskatchewan have become fullfledged states controlling and owning their own resources and perhaps posing an even greater threat to federal power and Canadian unity than separatist Quebec Too bad the book will have only limited appeal It should be read by every Canadian Prairie Capitalism Power and Influence in the New West By John Richards and Larry Pratt McClelland and Stewart 340 pages Sl695 Tues Wed Thurs Sun Evenings 730 10 pm IO BEll FARM RD BARRIE 7372266 that nitrites may cause cancer when fed in high doses to rats The Canadian health depart ment decided last year not to ban it but began limiting its use in meats here And although the book refers to nitrites antibacterial effect and talks about the growth of Clostridium botulinum the av erage reader will hardly know what all this means Simply put Clostridium bot ulinum is deadly food poison Nitrite has been used for cen turies as food preservative and is recognized for its ability to reducethe chance of this deadly bacteria in processed meat The health departments position not mentioned in the report Unless safe meat prsservative substitute is found we stick with nitrite but in smaller amounts In other areas however the book manages good assess ment of the effects of most chemicals even caffeine ACID RAIN EXPLAINED The authors offer detailed explanatio of the acid rain crisis now topical news item although scientists warned of such trouble years ago Problems arise partly be cause the guide published in June already is out of date in some parts With sulphur dioxide and acid rain for example federal pro vincial and US governments already are busy trying to re solve what has been called the most serious environmental problem Canada has ever faced But this action has only been taken within the last month or so despite years of research Sulphur dioxide product mainly of coal oil or natural gasfired plants is spewed into the air in the order of several million tonnes year Its reaction with water vapor in the atmosphere results in acid rain snow or hail and is likely to threaten thousands of eastern lakes if not checked Although subtitled Citizens Guide the book is largely scilt entific synopsis and many lay readers will be lost without dictionary 16X 32 Completely installed INGROUllD
