Clara Cavanagh is into leather tooling bending pounding By MARY DELANEY The Examiner Nowadays when you say person is into leather it con jures up risque images of little shops on the Yonge Street strip or jacket clad motorcyclists Clara Cavanagh of Barrie has been into leather for 30 years now Shes no biker but rather lifemember of the Simcoe County Arts and Crafts Association and one of the organizers of the original Quilt and Rug Fair begun in 1949 and changed to the Quilt Rug and Craft Fair in 1962 When the fair began 30 years ago its prime focus was on quilts and rugs Crafts were not popular then as they are today Clara speculates that when so many articles of sale were in fact homemade therewas little appeal in doing things from scratch Just as storebought bread was once luxury and is now replaced by the treat of homemade bread consumers in the forties and fifties prefer red to buy rather than bake build or craft their own goods Consequently crafts teachers were about as scarce com modity as crafts both reflec ting general lack of interest in the field When people like Clara Cavanagh tried to learn craft they encountered an im mediate stumbling block there was nowhere to go to learnit DR lIEY Clara Cavanagh directs much of her thanks to the direc tor of the Simcoe County its the best All our toils All our vinyls All our papers All our imports on sale selection anywhere All our miniprints Yes every roll every pattern every texture For every room in your home All the most uptodate patterns and colours All are prepasted and most are drystrippable Recreation Department of the late forties Dr Louise Colley for establishing the first craft programs in the Barrie area one of which was leathercraft Its 30 years since the first Rug and Quilt Fair held in Midland largely due to the presence there of Thor Hansen and Bill Cranston two of the earliest and most active members of the club Thor Hansen was designer whose quilt patterns remain popular today because of their bold lines and color and local themes wing in the Huronia Museum in Midland is dedicated to him The fair was held annually for the first decade moving each year to different com munity in the county In 1960 it skipped year and resurfaced in 1962 as the Quilt Rug and Craft Fair That year Clara Cavanagh had her first leather craft exhibit in the fair This year she will have her eighth CLOSETFUI LEATHER For many years Clara taught leathercraft herself at Georgian College She was also charter member of the local branch of national leather craft organization Several years ago she stopped teaching and is disappointed that no one has replaced her One explanation she sees is the inflated price of leather to day Leather that cosl 50 per square foot when she began now costs several dollars The same is true for the tools of the leathercrafter and the ac nstoc our anti selection Wallpaper Pie pasted Washable Paper Pie pasted Washable Peelable PrerpOSlEd Scrtibbable Dry She would think twice about taking up the craft today strictly for cost reasons Her own supply of leather fills closet to overflowing When she reached for box on top shelf an avalanche of hides scraps and partially completed belts wallets and bowls tumbled down the tannery smell filling the small workroom The leather has been ac cumulated over the years with some hides themselves being several years old and the entire value being many hundreds of dollars But she doesnt want to discourage anyone from the craft For pure enjoyment and the wide variety of products both ornamental and practical Clara believes leathercraft to be unequaled Her own home is filled unobtrusively with leather There are lamp stands bowls purses jewelry boxes and of course the more common wallets and belts You can see Clara at work along with other crafts people at the Quilt Rug and Craft Fair September 21 22 and 28 at the Simcoe County Museum Maybe youll feel the urge to get into leather too Sons of Scotland Collegiate Ann Landers Wants rerun of Saints Dear Ann Landers Will you please do rerun of the poem Saints and Sinners which appeared in your column March 22 1971 It is one of my favorites and lm sure many people would profit from seeing it again If Charlotte Dear KTR Time erodes the memory no question about it So heres the rerun Even was glad to see it again The author is Veda Ponikvar SAINTS AND SINNERS When some fellow yields to temptation And breaks conventional law We look for no good in his makeup Oh Lord how we look for the flaw No one asks Who did the tempting Nor allows for the battles hes fought His name becomes food for the jackals The saints who have never been caught lm sinner Lord and know it lam weak and blunder and fail lam tossed on lifes stormy ocean Like ship that is caught in gale lam willing to trust in thy mercy To keep the commandments thoust taught But deliver me Lord from the judgment 0f the saints who have never been caught Dear Ann Landers You are the only person in the whole world can ask about this Please help me Last night caught my husband gulping some yellow pills When asked him what they were for he said had prostate infection and hadnt mentioned it because he didnt want to worry me lm scared to death he might have VD Our sex life has been very good but with this fear hanging over me lm afraid to let him near me How can tell for sure that he is being truthful Faith ful Faye Dear Faye Get yourself checked at once If youre OK then he is too lm reasonably certain that if your husband had social disease his doctor would have insisted that you come in for an examination This is standard procedure Dear Ann Landers My husbands sister grossly over weight sat on our lovely antique bench and broke it to pieces Her only comment was Thank God didnt break my back Not one word about having the bench restored was really annoyed but kept my cool My husband says its our fault not his sisters In his words All furniture should be functional Antiques belong in museum Is he right Burning in Bridgeport Dear No heavyweight should not plant herself on delicate antique bench Some folks however dont know any better So its best to guide your obese guests to the sturdier pieces and casually remark The rickety furniture is unsafe Garden Notes Gwen offers some tips By JEAN GABLE Barrie Horticultural Society On Sept 6th the guest speaker for the fall season was Gwen Fawthrop who works for White Rose Nursery and has her own program on the Wingham Radio Station Gardening with Gwen Gwen had well attended meeting to address and this is what she had to say on bulbs The new bulbs are just arriv ing The first to be planted are daffodils and should be planted as soon as possible as they need time to establish root system before winter Thare are many varieties to Ehoose from King Alfred is one of the best large yellow ower Gwen suggested people plant the front of their homes for the public to enjoy and the back for their own special pleasure Bulbs are 35 cents each this year so plant them where you can see and enjoy them in clumps of five preferably Snowdrops small bulb are first to bloom so plant beside the steps in sheltered spot so they will give you lift in the spring Put some clumps of red Emperor Tulips and King Alfred Daffodils at the front to give everyone lift Just as soon as their blooms fade feed the bulbs with 202020 or X15 to ensure another season of bloom Never cut off the foliage until it dies down then tie up the old foliage for tidiness Hyacinths are beautiful but must be separated after the first year to allow for growth Hyacinths are also excellent for forcing Put dunce cap over them when planted in water to ensure the full length of flower will come out There are proper hyacinths planters for forcing Always start with large flower you get what you pay for Tulips and daffodils should be planted at least six inches deep from top of bulb If tulips are to remain for number of years plant up to 10 inches deep Remember to plant tulips with the pointed end up Alliums are less known bulbs but are very pretty they dont smell nice Fritillarias are beautiful but they also have an offensive odor ENGLAND RIVAIS butligigland is now rivalling Holland as producer of fine There are many kinds of tulips like rock garden tulips trilumph lily flowered parrots also Darwins and double tu ips Gwen said forcing tulips was not hard Put good forcing variety in clay or plastic pot cover with good soil water and put in cool dark place in your basement until you want them to grow When they start to grow give them lots of light but keep them in 50 to 60 degrees Keep turning them because they must have light Other excellent spring bulbs are crocuses which can be naturalized in the lawn or scillas under trees or in borders and grape hyacinths in blue and white Bone meal is good for fertilizing bulbs it is slow acting but long lasting Bulbs should be dusted with an insecticide before planting as preventive measure Gwen said black threat strung across the strawberry patch keeps the birds away Moth balls keep the pigeons and coons out of the corn patch NEVER PUT MANURE NEAR TIIE BULBS Amaryllis are wonderful bulbs for indoors and so are glox inias both need constant feeding use 202020 Violets and geraniums benefit from dose of epsom salts one teaspoon per quart once month When storing canna lilies dig in clump and store with the soil left on Soaking of evergreens before freezeup is most important also protecting them from the hot sun and March winds to prevent winter burn SOCIETY NEWS
