Examiner Satire directed at society thats already succumbed to craziness is usually doomed from the start how can you poke fun at the US when the reality of everyday life is non stop carnival of comedy black or otherwise Thats the pro blem faced by Americathon new comedy that opened Fri day at the Imperial The film tries hard to present vision of the US based on preentday trends The year is 1998 The bankrupt and fuelless country is forced to hold 30 day telethon to raise the $400 billion needed to save America from falling into the hands of the United Hebrab Republic confederation of oilrich Arabs and Jews Th host of the telethon is an ageing actor named Monty Rushmore Harvey Korman star of TV show called Both Mother and Father in which he plays transvestite parent The president of the US is Chet Roosevelt tJohn Ritter jargonspouting graduate of EST who bears more than slight resemblence to Califor nia governor Jerry Brovm TOO LIMP Amerieathon is too limp to carry off its own satiric vision and reaches for easy gags Director Neil Israel keeps the pace of the film as frenzied as possible but theres so little imagination and wit in the script that even two good comic actors like Korman and Bitter look silly when they should look inspired Nothing about this film is in spired except for brief ap pearance by actress Zane Busby as Vietnamese punk rock singer who steals the telethon show and wins the pas sion of the president Busbys musical number is fine send up of the punk rock movement Shes the only crazy in film that pretends to portray an en tir nation of crazies Everyone else in Americathon is wasted Meatloaf plays car smasher who auctions his blood for the telethon Elvis Costello squirms through rock song on London sidewalk Chief Dan George totters through tasteless portrayal of the richest Indian in America RIDICULOUS One of the problems with the HAVE COLT ONE John Rifter and Nancy Morgan in Americafhon the film reaches for easy gags every time films premise is that you cant simply extrapolate present day crisis into the future without looking little ridiculous Americathon tells us that people would live in their cars when fuel runs out futuristic version of housing subdivision but that idea isnt funny on the screen its just silly And watching fool like President Roosevelt recy cle EST cliches about headspace and experienc ing reality isnt very funny either Semi Tough tackled that target much more effectively and with much funnier results All the frenzied overacting in Americathon all the obvious jokes about psychology politi cians show business and televi sion fall flat after the first 15 minutes of the film Whats left is mostly tedious and only occa sionally entertaining Ritter and Korman deserve better So do does the audience
