The Examiner lhc Ameiiiaa system of ustice has taken its lumps from Hollywood this year first from losepli Wambaughs gripping mlltr drama The littlull Field and now from And Justice Iut All rat the imperial Ili the new Norman Jewison IIIIIt that tells us that system is three ring circus of corrup tloti liitotttpelettee tmd Injustice There nothing subtle about this film and the plot often sliiims itntlllilllty but theres something immensely enA pivalile itlmll watching an tlItltttl hottest lawyer do battle with the lorces of evil and ignorance Particularly when that law yet cheeky leltow named Arthur Kirkland is played by an actor as talented as Al lacitio IIIIAI Illuht UMIIIUMIHIL lauIno races through the Illlll as though hes an eager 21 year old fresh out of law school not tough l27year and pack of lawyers who have trouble ieiiienilwring their clients are people ltut laciiios problems don stop there His grandfather Pacino stand up for iustice is going senile in an old folks home his girlfriend is member of an ethics committee trying to get him disbarred and his partner goes berserk after killer he successfuly defended commits two more murders As if this werent enough to try the sanity of our hero theres more Pacino is blackmailed into defending muchhated judge John Foisythet charged with brutal rape and assault But there is some compensation for the audience enough comedy to balance the bad news Jack Warden who plays the pistolpacking judge is little more than caricature but hes very funny one And theres schizophrenic quality to the film that enables the comedy to coexist with the drama The films bite come frorn the fact that everything we see all the miscarriages of justice real ly does happen what makes the film work is the way were allowed to laugh in spite of the pain Pacinos acting is one of the best things about And Justice For All without hirii the film would fly apart at the seams By the end of the film hes so strung out by his ir resprcssiblc integrity Gauer7266537 Dont like being scared confesses actress Kane TORONTO iCPi Carol Kane has never seen Jaws The Exorcist or any number of the recent films that have terro rized audiences And she never intends to dont like blood dont like violence and dont like being scared period says the 27yearold actress tThat type of movie gives me had dreams and wont be sub jectedtoit Unfortunately saw parts of Psycho years ago and Im still frightened in the shower says Miss Kane who goes out of her way to avoid horror and invariably sticks her fingers in her ears and ducks her head whenever the tension gets too great on the screen While she certainly isnt unique in her feelings she does seem an unlikely candidate to be out flogging recently re leased suspense thriller When Stranger Calls in which she stars with Charles Durning and Colleen Dewhurst This film however is differ ent she argues Thre is no blood the violence is not ex plicit and there are no sim plistic blackandwhite heroes or villains KILLER IS ILL It is the story of teenaged babysitter who is terrorized by latenight phone calls from psychopath The killer who ultimately is found to be making his calls from inside the house is captured and later escapes to find new victims It probably wont do for ring ing telephones what Psycho did for showers but it is true to suspensefilm form The loca tions are all suitably isolated dark and eerie there is an abundance of thumping music to forecast the sinister events and the characters do the dum best things like turning down the lights and refusing to lock their doors And while Miss Kane can claim to not like such films she is the perfect complement to any thriller with her innocent wideeyed look gaunt face and frizzy hair She says she has no fear that the movie will influence any un balanced person to imitate it because it doesnt glamorize violence The killer isnt macho Hes clearly sick sick man You can almost feel sorry for him but you wouldnt admire him She doesnt know whether the Columbia picture by firsttime director Fred Walton is based on true account but says sev eral people have told her that they recall reading newspaper stories about it BADLY SCARED The actress who says she scared herself badly and had to spend the night at friends house after reading the film script is miffed by some peoples reactions to such mov ies She invited some friends to screening and they said they didnt want to come unless it was really scary not just sort of scary but really scary Ive been doing lot of thinking lately about it Perhaps she says the movies let people scream in the dark and get rid of some of the terror they feel in their everyday lives There is another redeeming value in the movie she be lievcs It might influence parents and babysitters to be more careful about their behavior When you were kid the yearold babysistter seemed so old such an adult But theyre really just kids themselves While the chances of having killer lurking in the house are slim lot of things could go wrong WHOLESALE ourm RECORDS TSHIRTS OPENING NOV Ist See Oct Ist Paper Corner of Dunlap Mulcaster Auroésouno CUSTOM INSTALLATION OF ANY MAKE CAR STEREO OR CB BY
