MAX HAINES 107 Toronto Sun Syndicate The Raven son song of deaih Exactly 30 years ago today on Sept 1949 Patrick Simard took brief respite from fishing eels near his home at SaultauCochon Quebec He hazed upward idly wat ching Douglas DC3 on its regular flight from Quebec City to Baie Comeau Patricks reverie turned to horror and sud denly there was loud explosion The plane veered crazily to the left and went into power dive heading straight toward Cape Tourmente Within hours Canadian Pacific Airlines the parent com pany of Quebec Airways who owned the DC3 had in vestigating officials at the crash site There were no sur vivors Four crew members and 19 passengers had plunged to their deaths The scene of the crash was strange in many ways Surprisingly there was no fire The plane had hit the earth in vertical position tearing off its wings The pro pellers had been rotating at the time of impact There was no swath of torn trees and underbrush just the grotesque mangled nose of the aircraft sticking into the ground The ominous smell of gasoline permeated the area Investigating officials had no trouble finding the cause of the crash The left front luggage compartment showed signs of an explosion It was this explosion which had destroyed the control system of the aircraft causing the disaster This was no accident Planes do not blow up from explo sions emanating from baggage compartments The in vestigation into the crash was turned over to the RCMP who were assisted by the Quebec Provincial Police and the Quebec City Police force Montreal flight It was established that the flight of the illfated DC3 had originated in Montreal When it landed at Ancienne Lorette Airport in Quebec City all cargo had been removed from the aircraft The plane had been reloaded in Quebec City for its flight to Baie Comeau It seemed reasonable to assume that someone had planted bomb on the aircraft at Quebec City Quietly and routinely police conducted investigations into all relatives of the 23 victims Initially they came up with nothing unusual There were no extraordinarily large sums of insurance money to be collected No victim was in the middle of ugly divorce proceedings While the investigation was going on police realized that the bomb may not have been included in passengers luggage Flights such as the illfated one from Quebec City to Baie Comeau often carried several pieces of freight Upon check ing the freight list for Sept investigating officers discovered one piece of freight weighting 28 lbs which had been sent from Delphis Bouchard of St Simeon Que to Alfred Plouffe 180 Laval St Baie Comeau Neither sender nor addressee existed Could this have been the death parcel Freight clerk Willia Lamonde had been on duty that day at the airport Now he was being asked to remember how he came into possession of the 28 lb parcel Willia remembered because ca bby had helped lady carry the parcel from his taxi to the freight office She was fat woman distinctively dressed all in black Willie had given her receipt for $272 Police started the tedious task of questioning every cabby in Quebec City and almost immediately found the right man Paul Ielletier remembered her face well He had pick ed her up near the railway station on Sept On the way to the airport his passenger didnt say one word to him Because she was returning to the city with him he thought it would be to his benefit to help her carry the parcel into the freight office Pelletier then drove his fare back to Quebec City and let her out near the Chateau Frontenac In the meantime police came up with one relative of vic tim who had managed to get into minor scrape For the first time the name Albert Guay was brought to the atten tion of the authorities Alberts wifes wife Rita had perished in the crash but Albert had passed the initial police ques tioning His name came up again because of minor inci dent which took place in Quebec City restaurant Albert had been fined $25 for causing scene some months previously when he had brandished revolver at waitress named MarieAnge Robitaille When police picked up Marie Ange they found her to be an attractive shapely 18yearold who was quite willing to tell all MarieAnge admitted knowing Albert Guay She even told police that she and Albert had mutual friend Marguerite Iitre who lived on Monsigneur Gauvreau Street Knowing glances were exchanged when MarieAnge mentioned that Marguerite was decidedly overweight and almost always wore black Officials arranged for cabby Pelletier to get good look at Marguerite He pesitvely identified her as the lady he had driven to the airport with the parcel Who was this fat lady What circumstances tied her to the young waitress MarieAnge Robitaille How was Guay con nected with the two women The tangled diabolical plot began to unfold It would prove to be as intriguing and in vol ved as anything fiction writers have been able to concoct Albert Guay had been employed in war plant during the Second World War when at the age of 22 he met Rita Morel Soon the young couple married and moved to Seven Islands Que where Albert opened jewelry shop In 1948 he closed this shop and opened another in Quebec City on St Sauveur Street It was then that he met MarieAnge Robitaille Guay entered into prolonged affair with the attracctive Marie Ange She lived in room in Marguerite Pitres house and it ALBERT GUAYin love triangle was here that Albert would come to make love to Marie Ange with Marguerites complicity Marguerite had met Albert during the war She had bor rowed small amounts of money from Albert and in this way become indebted to him Soon he had her complying to his every wish As the details of the women in Alberts life became headlines across Canada in 1949 the press took one look at Marguerite and christened her The Raven The name stuck and in the ensuing months she was called little else Under questioning The Raven sang She told of Alberts hold over her because she owed him money Her crippled brother Genereux Ruest worked as watch repairman in Alberts shop If she didnt comply with Alberts wishes he threaten ed to fire her brother The Raven told of setting up MarieAnge in her house when she was only 16 For two years Albert made love to the attractive teenager In the meantime The Ravens debt to Albert exceeded $600 When he approached her to get him some dynamite in return for his cancelling the debt she jumped at the chance The Raven claimed that Albert told her the dymanite was to be used for clearing stumps She had managed to procure dynamite and blasting caps from acquaintances in the construction business Finally face to face with cabby Pelletier The Raven admitted delivering the explosives to the airport Culprit in custody On Sept 23 only two weeks after the airplane crash Albert Guay was arrested and taken into custody He admit ted everything except murder Police correctly deduced that jewelry shop is logical place to manufacture bomb They descended on Genereux Ruest the Ravens crippled brother who vehemently denied any guilty knowledge of the whole affair Detectives practically took apart the workshop searching for evidence that the bomb had been made there They came up with an insignificant piece of corrugated cardboard coated with black deposits This piece of potential evidence was rushed to Montreal lab Here detectives exploded blasting caps using corrugated bardboard as shield The resulting explosions left black deposits on the cardboard matching the ones on the card board taken from Ruests workshop The same deposits ap peared on the inside of the left front luggage compartment of the downed aircraft Pathetic Genereux Ruest was confronted with this evidence He admitted constructing the bomb and ex perimenting with Albert on the best way to set it off He swore he had no idea it was to be used for anything other than clearing stumps No one believed him On Feb 23 1950 Albert Guay stood trial for murder Throughout his ordeal he swore he was innocent The jury took only 17 minutes to find Albert guilty He was sentenced to death by hanging Once Albert was convinced that nothing could save him from the gallows he made full con fession He implicated his two accomplices even further in the plot He claimed that the Raven and Ruest were willing and eager helpers being motivated by the promise of money for their assistance On Jan 12 1951 Albert was hanged for killing total of 23 people in order to do away with his wife The Raven and her brother didnt fare any better Genereux Ruest was hanged in 1952 followed by Raven in 1953 MarieAnge Robitaille while extremely knowledgeable in affairs of the boudoir was able to prove that she knew nothing of plots or bombs She was never charged
