ssto Patriots Sworn To Be Free Or Die Canada has been fortunate to escape civil wars like those that have taken place in Britain France and the US They are the most tragic type of war where fathers have been known to kill sons and brothers have killed brothers However there have been some tragic out breaks including the rebellions in Lower and Upper Canada in 1837 and the Northwest in 1885 The Lower Canada Rebellion was the more serious of the outbreaks in 1837 After months of violent negotia tions with British officials the climax came in meeting at St Charles on the Richelieu River on October 23 1837 The meeting was staged along the lines of the American and French revolutions There was liberty tree which was touched by each patriot who swore that he would be free or die Dr Wolfred Nelson chairman of the meeting slogan in Germany when farming the flames for World War II The opening of the rebellion was easily defeated by Sir John Colbornes troops but there were number of ugly incidents Lieutenant Weir was murdered while carrying dispatches to the commanding officer at Sorel Loyalist soldiers hit back and burned the village of St Denis There was heavy fighting at St Charles where one witness counted 150 bodies Rebels at St Eustache used church as fort and fired on Colbornes troops They set fire to the church and many rebels perished inside The rebel leaders fled including Louis Joseph Papineau There was more fighting in 1738 led by two brothers uoth doctors Robert and Wolfred Nelson It was all tragic and of no avail OTHER EVENTS ON OCTOBER 23 1670 Jean Talon Dear Dr Donohue My son inlaws brother has Brights disease He is 19 and it was recently discovered through routine physical exam He understood it to be hereditary hitting every other generation Pid he understand this correct His mother was from large family and three of her nephews also have it It seems to be only the boys What are the symptoms of Brights disease Mrs AT Brights disease has an ominous ring doesnt it Yet it is very general term that means little really Its almost like saying kidney disease Its necessary to find out what kind of kidney disease one is speaking of Your letter offers little to go on You mention heredity This idea can be confusing Medical ly one thinks of heredity as the passing on of certain traits good or badl to offspring Some kidney diseases are in herited That is called hereditary nephritis Alports syndrome is one form and males are more severely affected than are females Sometimes persons with Alports syndrome have cataracts and are deaf Often red blood cells are found in the urine Now Im not suggesting your soninlaws brother has Alports syndrome just use it to give you an example of hereditary kidney problem There are other kidney pro blems that seem to run in families Thats different than saying they are hereditary Icaused by faulty genest Polycystic disease of the kidneys runs in families The important point is that kidney problems cannot be diagnosed with 100 per cent accuracy from BRIDGE physical examination alone although doctors may be able to feel polycystic kidney for ex ample More detailed tests such as xrays or even biopsy are need ed to pinpoint kidney diseases Dear Dr Donohue Can you help me with my ingrown toenail cut it too short It is now growing in and wont grow over the top of my toe Mrs surgeon friend of mine who has his own problem of ingrown toenails suggested these guides ln cutting toenails it is important to cut them straight across Do not try to cut down around the edges This may be the mistake you are making To correct the problem of nail growing into the skin at the nail bed end soak your feet in warm soapy water twice day This softens the nail Then wedge tiny bit of cotton under the nbil at the corners Leave the cotton in place between soaks In time the nail will grow properly the assures me Dear Dr Donohuc Please tell me about adhesions have had several operations and after the last one was told was filled with adhesions have been having some in testinal trouble and am wondering if they have anything to do with this Ms EL Adhesions are nothing more than scar tissue They form after any abdominal surgery After all you have been cut the scar forms at point where it interferes with an organs function trouble can arise For instance in your case it is possible that scar tissue is en circling your bowel interfering with its emptying Bothersome adhesions can be removed surgically If they dont cause trouble they are best left alone Oswald Jacoby and AlanWSontagr
