6A the examiner Friday Oct 979 On Jan 18 1938 67yearold Jane Dobson left High Grange heading for Wolviston She never made it When she failed to return that evening Henry Dobson rationalized that his wife may have continued on to Newcastle to visit their married daughter That night he made three trips down from the farm house to the road to meet the bus but each time there was no sign of his wife tim was hardworking honest farmers wife She had no bad habits didnt drink nor had she any male friends out In the meantime police were endeavoring to trace Mrs Dobsons last walk According to Mr Dobsons statement his wife left the farm between 430 and oclock At about 530 Percy Swales and Thomas Nelson drove their cattle truck off the road onto the farm track It was dusk Their headlights picked up man standing beside the road The man quickly dropped to the plowed field The strangers ob vious mode of travel was bicycle which was lying beside the road Swales drove up to the man the game here and shouted Hullo whats The man replied in an easily distinguishable local accent Im all right have had one over the nine Drive on Loosely translated lIve had one too many Im drunk Swales and Nelson drove on They didnt know it at the time but they had interrupted the killer in the act of raping and murdering Jane Dobson Later under questioning the men were able to describe the appearance of the man they had seen for only an instant They told police that the killer wore cap and leggings llis bicycle had the appeaance of racing bike with dropped handlebars Swales and Nelson drove on to the Dobson farm unloaded some pigs and returned past the area where they had seen the bicycle It was now 545 pm The bicycle was gone and the men drove on never giving the incident another thought Because the Hoolhouse family had been mentioned as the only ones Mr Dobson could think of as enemies police call ed on Robert Hoolhouse They observed that he was pale Hoolhouse explained away the scratches and nervousness by telling the police that he had taken rather bad spill off his bicycle Police exchanged knowing glances when the bicycle proved to have dropped handle Haverton Hill police station wh In essence he claimed that bars Hoolhouse was taken to ere he gave statement he had visited the home of Balsam finds his way to Archies new place Martin Balsam who portrays Murray Kline inVCBSTVs Ar chie Bunkers Place began his impressive acting career he holds Oscar Tony and Obie awards while still in high school native New Yorker he performed in every play he could joined community drama groups played in revue skits and toured the summer circuit as an emcee He studied drama at the New School for Social Research supporting himself as an usher mechanic salesman and waiter before making his pro fessional debut in The Plays the Thing in 1941 After World War II he ap peared in stock and community theatre in hundreds of per formances becoming one of the theatres finest character ac tors He won the Tony Award in 1967 for You Know Cant Hear You When the Waters Runn ing and the 1978 Obie Award for Cold Storage His other stage roles include Middle of the Night The Iceman Com eth and Nowhere to Go But Up He made his feature film debut in 1954 in On the Water front and won the 1965 Oscar as Best Supporting Actor in Thousand Clowns gt illiam Husband on the day of Mrs Dobsons murder He called on Husbands daughter and Miss Lax remaining there until about 330 pm He stated that he left the Hus band residence which is located close to the Dobson farm and cycled home arriving at about oclock It was on the trip home that he took the bad spill off his bike That evening he returned by bus and accompanied Miss Lax to the movies and Billingham The story seemed plausible enough and neatly removed Hoolhouse from the scene of the crime at 530 the most pro crucial time With the opportunity to rape and kill Mrs Dob son sometime after 515 Remember Swales and Nelson ac tually spoke to the killer at 530 Differing times When the police returned to Hoolhouse and advised him that Miss Husband and Miss Lax differed with his story as to times he said that he must be mistaken They were right Poor Hoolhouse gave another statement suggesting that he had made terrible mistake the first time around Hoolhouse was arrested and charged with Mrs Dobsons murder The prosecution made much of the fact that Hoolhouse had fabricated fictitious times in order to place himself at his home at the time of Mrs Dobsons murder The scratches on his face weighed heavily against him Iloolhouses trial lasted three days He was found guilty and sentenced to hang All appeals failed and he was duly ex ecuted at Durham iaol Since Hoolhouses execution there have been grave doubts expressed as to his guilt Hoolhouse would Iiot be the first iii nocent man to concoct false story out of fear of being wrongly convicted Knowing that he was near the scene of the murder at the time it was committed did Hoolhouse stupidly lie about the time to remove himself from the scene of the crime The fact that he was in the vicinity at the time of the crime is not proof of guilt Miss Lax swore that she hadnt noticed any scratches on Hoolhouses face on their late at the movies Did Hoolhouse have legitimate fall off his bike the day after the murder when police noted the scratches Knowing how incriminating they were did Hoolhouse move his bicy cle mishap up day so that it would appear that he had the scratches before the murder We will never be certain of the answers to these questions Unlike fiction Hoolhouse never had the advantage of the real killer coming forward to confess all The real trutl of the Dobson case will forever remain mystery SPECIALIZING IN HOMEMADE COOKING
