gas irritate the eyes throat and lungs with respiratory problems including chemical pneumonia often developing few hours after exposure Silo gas is not new problem in Ontario says Larry Swin of the Farm Safety Association of Ontario However the incidence has increased with the advent of covered tower silos he says As well increasing the corn belt has contributed to rise in silo gas problems In GAS MIXTURE Silo gas mixture of gases primarily nitrogen dioxide is formed during the fermentation process in the silo It is in fluenced by many things including weather temperature and condition of the crop The Farm Safety Association says the best way to prevent ex posure to silo gas is to stay out of the silo for at least three weeks after filling it Even after the danger period is over however run the blower for half an hour before entering the silo and use lifeline If you must enter the silo during the danger period the association recommends using selfcontained breathing ap paratus and lifeline In high concentrations the gas appears reddish or yellowishbrown and has bleachy ordor says Swinn But you cant count on the color or smell as warning sign In low concentrations this gas can be colorless and odorless Swimm tecommends proper maintenance and adjustment of silage equipment before fillings This will reduce the need for those dangerous trips into the silo he says Farmers should also remember that silo gas is heavier than air It is often trapped in pockets throughout the silage and can seep down the chute into the feed room To ensure safety leave door open just
