YORK AP Although Monty Pythons con troversial movie Life of Brian has been branded blasphemous by religious groups it has been branded successful at the box office breaking house records here and in other cities Wed like to thank all the ministers priests and rabbis says Graham Chapman and Terry Jones two members of the six man British comedy group They say the religious outrage over the film has made it more popular then anyone had everhoped People who wouldnt or dinarily go to see Monty Python film are going to this one if even to tuttut bit Jones who directed the film said in an interview It does get attention and thats useful for the film add Thats no lady ed Chapman who plays Brian After all we do want lot of people to see it It helps us get beyond the audience we have at the moment The trade publication Varie ty in its list of 50 topgrossing films recently ranked Life of Brian No 25 up two places from the previous week EXPECT THE WORST The movie is about Brian reluctant messiah leaders are mistaken in their attacks on the film Jone said When they say its blasphemous theyre not actually seeing whats in the film but what they think theyre going to see The film isnt dealing with belief in God or Christ or what Christ said Its talking about the way people interpret what Christ said Its about people getting messages wrong The comedians cite scene in which former leper is com plaining that since being heat ed he cant get job Thats not attacking Christ said Chapman Its attacking mans ingratitude Attacks against the movie started even before it was made There was an organization called the Festival of Light in England which sent 11 pages of the script to the English film censor before we actually film ed the thing said Jones STYLE ABSTRACT One question the comedians often are asked is what makes Monty Pythons brand of humor seem more attractive to North American audiences than other forms of British humor Ive been developing theory over the years about that said Jones Its because Python is more abstract You can attach your own meaning toit Jones and Chapman said Monty Python has another film in the works but they would not saywhat its about 309W AMPLE FREE PARKING By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner In March 1963 two petty crooks named Greg Powell and Jimmy Lee Smith Shot and kill ed Los Angeles policeman in an isolated onion field near Bakersfield Powell and Smith were convicted of murder and sentenced to death both men and their sentences overturned and both will be eligible for parole in the early 19805 Joseph Wambaughs account of the PowellSmith murder The Onion Field was bestseller when first published couple of years ago The former LA policemantumed writer has made the book into movie and the result now showing at the Bayfield Mall Cinema is one of the most powerful screen dramas of the year Wambaughs script moves slowly in documentary style recreating the events leading up to the murder and its tragic aftermath with an authenticity few Hollywood films can match And its this authenticity that gives the film the power of nightmare that refuses to end INCOMPETENT CROOKS Powell and Smith were smalltime crooks so incompe tent they had trouble robbing li quor stores Powell was the brainier of the two borderline psychotic with an itchy trigger finger As played by James Woods hes totally believable and absolutely terrifying Powell and Smith kidnap two undercover policemen Ian Campbell and Karl Hettinger when theyre stopped on route to holdup They panic and murder Campbell allowing Hettinger John Savage to escape from the onion field and begin sevenyear nightmare of guilt and depression Even when Powell and Smith are sent to death row at San Quentin Hettinger cant shake the feeling that hes responsible for the death of his partner The case drags on as the two killers fight their sentence in the courts Hettinger is so distraught he begins to shoplift is forced to quit his job and eventuallv becomes suicidal Theatre London chooses new director OTTAWA CP Actor director Bernard Hopkins will succeed William Hutt as ar tistic director of Theatre Lon don next July the theatre has announced Now treatment of con victed murderers and the policie of the LA police department Should Hettinger and Campbell have sur rendered their guns to Powell and Smith Are the courts too lenient in allowing criminal ap peals VIEWER DECIDES Wambaughs script raises these questions but doesnt really try to answer them He Wambaughs account tercitying Onion Field packs power takes the approach that its up to the viewer to decide the rights and wrongs of the story And by the end of the film youre exhausted by Het tingers suffering and the killers manipulation the courts The acting in this film is superb Savage has the most difficult role and never quite brings the character of Het tinger into sharp focus Hes the centre of the film but hes overshadowed by Woods haunting portrayal of Powell Powell and Smith are classic studies of the crimlml personality and both seem real but Hettinger and Camp bell lack the same vivnd characterization But thats minor flaw in very moving film Everyone loses in The Onion Field the pOIICe just as much as the criminals and thats bitter lesson to have to team The police stories rarely have hap py endings and Wambaugh has given us one of the blackest and unhappiest of them all entertainment Editor Stephen Gauer7266537 At 73 John Huston aims for more classics TORONTO CP He has directed 37 movies and acted in dozen Hes been married five times First to schoolgirl
