Savage has the most difficult role and never quite brings the character of Het tinger into sharp focus Hes the centre of the film but hes overshadowed by Woods haunting portrayal of Powell Powell and Smith are classic studies of the crimlml personality and both seem real but Hettinger and Camp bell lack the same vivnd characterization But thats minor flaw in very moving film Everyone loses in The Onion Field the pOIICe just as much as the criminals and thats bitter lesson to have to team The police stories rarely have hap py endings and Wambaugh has given us one of the blackest and unhappiest
