um tnmugmw Moore play opens in St Catharines By BETTY LAMPARD St Catharines Standard ST CATHARINES Ont CP The world premiere of Love and Politics on Friday mght was remarkable in several aspects not the least of which was that it opened in this mediumsized Ontario city and not in metropolis where plays are usually unveiled The playwright is Mavor Moore chairman of the Canada Council and one of Canadas foremost men of theatre He chose Press Theatre of St Catharines as the company and place to open his play feeling the historical ambience would showcase it Moore has fashioned play in character with the 19th century in which it is set and about the Canada that hasevolved It is satire sly and delightful in the fashion of melodramatic farce The play inspired by farce called The Fair Grit expands the political theme and extends it with song Set in Toronto in 1879 it fo cuses on rivalry social and political between Grits and Tories Judge St Clairs family is Tory his son educated abroad is politically openminded The fortunes of the McRoberts family have fol lowed the fathers meteoric rise from plumber to senator Daughter Angelina meets the St Clair heir George and love ensues but they are driven apart by their parents conflict ing politics ENDING HAPPY With the help of Georges staunch friend Captain Ronald Manners and the McRobertss maid Mary and the antics of printers devil Billy all fac tions are reconciled The second act proceeds smartly in contrast to the first to glorious flagwaving end mg Grant Cowan is bubbling and eager little judge while Nannie Griffin is his tail and handsome wife displaying fine singing voice and stage presence Peter Mews is rugged and opinionated as the senator and Maxine Miller his fussy little wife Donald Stephens has the rather pallid role of George but makes the best of it Sharry Flett is charming Angelina but her singing voice seems shrill Damon Mycocks Capt Man ners is tall graceful and hand some with fine singing voice adding brightness and vigor to the action Jacquie Presly as the maid is bright and charming addition to the story SHOWS OFF VOICE Jim Betts as Wangler the Tory candidate is great song anddance man And Don McManus gets to show off his fine voice as Upton editor of the Tory Dasher Sam Mancuso is the editor of the Grit Sma sher and Chick Roberts naive farmer Snapper The part of the printers devil is
