By TONY PANACCI Of The Examiner 32 years ago Armand Bep Guidolin and winter together Guidolins career in hockey which has been in overdrive for the past 39 years is temporarily in neutral but the Barrie resi dent for the last 11 years says thats just fine with him HAD OFFERS had couple of offers to coach minor league teams Guidolin said while sitting in his Northpark Road home But Ive got too much experience to have to put up with all those long bus rides in the minor leagues Im enjoying spending time in my home With my wife Before the present hockey season got underway there were several National Hockey League coaching jobs available Toronto Montreal Buffalo Boston Atlanta and few others had jobs to be filled One would think that man of Guidolins ex perience would be highlysought after The fact that there was shortage of coaches was fabricated by the press Guidolin said There are plenty of coaches to fill thejobs Guidolin said he applied for couple of the jobs including Toronto but the teams already had their coaches picked There are bunch of new people running the teams now Guidolin said and they take of their own people Guidolinalso thinks that the decision he made after the 197475 season to leave as the Boston Bruins coach to take over as the mentor of the newlyformed Kansas City Scouts has come back to haunt him SHOULD HAVE STAYED should never have left Boston he said had everything going for me ex perience and very good hockey club Guidolin was offered fiveyear contract to coach the Scouts The Bruins would offer him no more than twoyear pact He decided to go where he thought the money and security was While was talking to Kansas City Harry Sinden the Bruins general manager asked me Bep are you sure youre going to get the money didnt know what he meant then but now know For the first time since they were married his wife Eleanor will be spending an entire Bep Guidolin The Kansas City team went bankrupt after two years and Guidolin lost out on $106000 which he will never collect made mistake in leaving Boston and now have to live with that mistake he said Guidolins decision to leave the Bruins opened the door for Don Cherry who took over as the clubs coach Ironically Cherry has also decided to live in Bostonfle opted for the mountains and money in Colorado the team which was previously known as the Kansas City Scouts Im not going to jump at coaching job somewhere were dont want to go Guidolin said YOUNGEST PLAYER Guidolin holds distinction in hockey which may never be erased In 1942 at the age of 16 he broke the lineup of the Bruins and is the youngest man ever to play in the National Hockey League The war was on then and several of the Bniin regulars were in the armed forces Guidolin said went to the camp and my skating ability earned me spot on the roster It was during that first year in Boston that Guidolin met his wife Mrs Guidolin who at the time was also 16 was headliner With the Ice Capades She is originally from St Louis Missouri Five years later the two married Guidolin played in the National Hockey League until 1954 taking year and half off himself to serve in the army WENT TO MINORS In those days after to seasons in the NHL forward was just about done Guidolin said The Bruins demoted him to the minors and he spent five years playing for Syracuse and Ottawa in the American Hockey League In 1961 Guidolin decided to hang up the skates for good and started looking into the possibilities of making career in hockey off the ice He accpeted position as scout for the Bruins few years later Guidolin got tip that there was dynamite prospect in Parry Sound Guidolin got in his car and drove to the northern town to check out the 12 year old prospect named Bobby Orr Two years later the Bruins signed him and the future Hall of Famer reported to play junior hockey in Oshawa egrets eaving Eleano ad Bep Guidolin hold two of the many momentos which adorn their Northpark Road home Mrs Guidolin holds poster Newmarket and could still be coaching there today had chosen to WENT TO BRAVES Instead Guidolin opted to coach the Boston Braves the American League at filiate of the Bruins went there because it was chance to earn shot at eventually taking over an NHL team It was team stocked with first year pros and Guidolin guided them to the league pen nant and the finals in the playoffs before bowing out to Al MacNeils Nova Scotia Voye uers Mi way through the 197374 season the Bruins were doing poorly and Sinden decid ed to fire Tom Johnston and bring in Guidolin The next season was an excellent one for the Bruins as they took the league pennant and went to the final In the final they were defeated in six games by the upstart Philadelphia Flyers That series was an example of the best hockey team in the world losing to the hardest working team in the world Guidolin said ILLFATED MOVE The next year came the illfated move to Kansas City Guidolin said he could see that hockey would never crack the sports scene in the middle America City Midway through the second year could see Id made mistake in leaving the Bruins he said But there was no way could go back to Boston Guidolin did not apply for the Bruin job when it came open this past year Two years ago Guidolin coached and managed the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association and last year he handl ed the bench for the Philiadelphia Firebirds It was there that he discovered coaching in the minors wasnt for him TAUGIIT FIGURE SKATING Through the years of the many moves one thing has remained stable for the Guidolin family their hockey will be limited to manager of the Angus ban tams friend of his is sponsoring the team and he asked him to help out Ill be going on the ice with the players and try to help them out he said HOCKEY SCHOOL The Guidolins will also be running hockey and power skating school in Angus from December 24 to January pay taxes here and want to make contribu tion he said Angus asked for my help so Im happy to do it Since Guidolin plans in staying in Barrie the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching job would have been ideal for him applied for the job but Punch lmlach already had his man picked he said Ive talked to Punch couple of times and he knows Im here if he needs me in the future Guidolin also says that he Would like to get involved in movement to bring an OHA tier twojunior club to Barrie think Barrie is natural for that league he said The teams have to go right through Barrie to go play North Bay and most of the teams are relatively close to here And of coure there is always the possibili ty that he will break back into the coaching ranks of the NHL Its real buddy system there he says If man gets management job with team he brings in all his friends to fill the positions
