say that Gerry Allaby digs archaeology is almost irrestible to anyone delivering an introduction to the work of this Georgian College teacher Avoiding that obvious pun well say instead that Gerry Allaby was working in the dark for most of his summer in Egypt not deep in hole or the innermost chambers of tomb but in darkroom darkroom incidentally that vaguely resembled the kitchen in which their food was prepared not compliment to either Gerry an art history teacher and his wife Trudy an ar tist were part of an international archeological dig this past summer to explore the temple to Gempoaten built by Pharoah Akhenaten who reigned from 1375 to 1358 BC Gerry was the official team photographer In slide show at Georgian College on Wednesday Gerry chronicled the three month stay in Egypt revealing the beauty and mystery of this ancient land along with the challenging conditions under which they worked and the lighter side of 12 weeks on the desert JOE CLARK The project was sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute in conjunction with the Canadian Killam Foundation the University of Toronto and several smaller organizations The crew included over 40 specialists and volunteers from Canada the US and Europe working in Egypt from May 14 to early August Bone specialists artists people to piece together the bits of pottery people to do the actual digging computer scientists experts in history and anthropology and host of others made up the interdisciplinary team It was the job of Gerry Allaby to photograph the people and events of the dig for visual record As well he had to photograh the hundreds of articles found on the site develop and print the film in primitive darkroom and keep careful file of all negs and prints The shots ranged from sunsets on the Nile to the hyroglyphs of 5000yearold tombs to worker taking break for shot of Kaopectate Its back to Egypt for the Allabys next summer for more experiences and hopefully the discovery of the north wall when EK 79 East Karnak 79i becomes EK 80 Our setup was such that didnt want to be mistaken fora prostitute she said Thursday was dressed as neat and clean as possible and wore very little makeup When the plan was formu lated the police officers estab lished three conditions for ar rest that they were sure would stand up in court Mrs Leaver had to be both ered at least three times and request for sex and an offer of money had to be included It was unbelievable she said When first began there would be cars bumperto bumper with lone male occu pants And when said no to one the rest would be right there waiting And there were some who persisted as many as 19times She was amazed at the men who tried to pick her up They were not sex maniacs or per verts but ordinary husbands your nextdoor neighbor of them were arrested and charged wih soliciting But by the end of the assignment the support she won from the com munity more than made up for her anger at what put her on those streets When she was first assigned Mrs Leaver had no idea the roblem on the Track was so ad But since the recent purge of the Yonge Street strip the area was invaded by men cruis ing in cars day and night try ing to pick up women they be lieved were prostitutes Not even working women rc turning home from the corner store with jug of milk were leftalone In her casuai outfit purse slung over one shoulder Mrs Leaver looked like any other woman in her late 20s out fora stroll except that when the purse changed shoulders that was the signal for her twoman backup team to move in and arrest SENIOR CITIZENS those beautiful eyes behind to die Please explain Im signing this Bewildered In hicago Dear Ann Landers As loyal fan and faithful reader of your column was deeply disappointed when you agreed with the statementflNobodylknows why girls want showoff weddings It works theri mothers to death It runs their father into debt and adds to their burdens It makes the bride haggard with anxiety so that invariably she looks homelier thanshe does at any other time Dear Inq showoff wedding is an affair on which people spend more money than they can afford to impress people they dont care about in an effort to tran storm religious ceremony into tasteless ostentatious extravaganza When its over all they have are sore feet hangover nervewracking stack of bills and lot of criticism from catty guests Dear Ann Now that you have defined pathological liar will you please go one step further and tell us what to do with one woman in our social circle definitely fits into that cate gory No one knows whether to tell her to come off it when she starts to tell one of her loony stories or pretend to believe all the junk Her madeup yarns are bizarre Example Prince Charles chased her last summer on the French Riviera Its downright embarrassing to listen to such rot The woman isnt vicious but we hate for her to think we are dumb enough to be taken in by her fantasies Please advise We shall do as you say Enough is Enough In Yonkers Dear Yonk Be compassionate Remember this pathetic woman actually believes she is speaking the truth pathological liar cannot distingmshed between fact and fantasy The
