Former pro leads Terriers By BILL CURRAN The question of how Barrie Flyers will fare against Orillia Terriers in the current Georgian Bay intermediate circuit should at least be partially answered when these old hockey rivals clash in league encounter here next Friday night Both teams have added strength since their two re season exhibition tests which ended in draw at Ori lia and 65 loss for the locals here in Barrie Paul Regans squad was shorthanded for both these workouts In the game at Orillia the Flyers started with on ly 10 players But there will be full lineups for the coming league tilt Coach Wayne Rutledge gained more confidence of fans at Orillia when he pulled the Terriers through in their league opener against Darryl Slys Shipbuilders at Collingwood It required overtime but the 54 verdict was well received by Terrier followers The overtime goal for Orillia was netted by one of the team newcomers in Vytas Urbas who registered on hard shot after taking pass from Don Raybould Both these players also figured in earlier scoring as well ONCE WITH HAP EMMS JUNIORS Like DarrylSly coach Rutledge is former pro hockeyist who is also being counted on to appear in the nets for at least some of the games However veteran Clyde Harris guarded the cage capany for the opening Orillia triumph Barrie fans who remember back to the 195960 junior Flyers may recall that Rutledge was goaltender for that memorable Barrie ruad coached by the great Hap Emms Former New York Ranger Dale Rolfe Larry Jones and Pierre Gagne were among other star performers with that notable team which battled their way into the junior playoffs to the Ontario finals FOUR OIIA TITLES IN SIX YEARS Commenting on an earlier reference to former NHL star Doug Mohns local enthusiast forwarded clipping which showed Mohns was of the leading lights with Barries 1953 Memorial cup winners At that time Emms guided the junior Flyers to their fourth OHA championship in six years Statistics quoted showed the 1953 Flyers racked up 37 wins with two draws and only 17 losses in winning the Canadian laurels for Barrie The team had Bill Harrington in goal and boasted such stalwarts as Skip Teal Tony Poeta CURLERS GETTING SET FOR ACTION Turning to curling there is considerable current prepara tion activity at both the Barrie clubs as well as others in this area Barries Essa Road club now headed by Henry will again have some 800 members which makes it easily the largest in the county junior school curlers clinic is plann ed for next Saturday Secretary Frank Hersey reports the ladies local schedule opens on Monday Oct 22 and the mens Wednesday night play will follow two evenings later with regular schedules beginning Oct 29 Business girls also will begin curling Oct 24 At Orillia where Bill
