Jerry Oetelaar 53yearold native Dutchman is handcrafting bellows in workshop behind his house in Flos Township With old world craftsmanship Oetelaar believes refinements make his the finest bellows in the world Examiner Photo Washago husbandwife team wins $2M contract WASHAGO hUSbandandwife team who own small carpenters shop here have entered the competitive world of big con struction and proven themselves to be win ners Ivan and Pat MacDonald owners of the Washago Carpentry Shop recently won $2 million construction contract with Food Corp to build two Swiss Chalet and Harveys Hamburgers restaurants in Edmonton MacDonald is already with his chosen sub contractors while his wife who acts as the companys bookkeeper and office manager is still in Wasliago tidying up East minute business and plans to leave next week Mrs Macdonald says they are both delighted to have won the contract It will be good reference for future bids she says which is what the company has been reaching for The couple founded the Carpentry Shop three years ago after heading north to Washago from Toronto to live slowerpaced life Mrs MacDonald says MOVED FROM TORONTO MacDonald 51 had worked for years as construction superintendent with large firms in Toronto says his wife and it was his idea to make living from just local work in Washago The business quickly made good contacts however and shortly after it opened mart Stores hired MacDonald to complete indoor renovations such as light fixtures and shelv ing in their stores across Canada contract for one mart store ranges up to $40000 Mrs MacDonald says but this doesnt match the Edmonton job The growth of business has made it necessary for the company to open second location on the main street and it also has suboffice in Toronto where project manager there handles variety of local jobs Mrs MacDonald says she believes the shop is the only carpentry business with head of fice in small town and its suboffice in large city The move to Edmonton wont mean the closing of the shop here Mrs MacDonald says and team will be on hand to work with the regular customers as the company is still big on community jobs She says the job in Edmonton will take anywhere up to eight months to complete Dollars and Sense Dallas seminar array of topics By RALPH ALEXANDER Well friends havent got question for todays answer unless perhaps its my wife asking What were you doing in Dallas all that time Well the truth is spent the last days of September in Dallas on research mission and 11 now share some of my findings with you For example did you know that there are forty 40 Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders In addition to discovering that earth shattering fact spent time attending the Real Money ll Investment Strategy Seminar This seminar featured presena tations and discussions by some of the best known and most followed financial authorities Some of these people and their opinions included Howard Ruff lIditorlublisher of the Ruff Times the most subscribed to in vestment letter in North America Howard felt that the gold market was no longer rational market and he advised his clients to sell all gold including their survival coins being held to protect against the breakdown of our economy andor civilization HIGHER INTEREST James Sinclair well known invest ment advisor particularly in the area of precious metals and currencies felt that after temporary sharp drop around $400 US per ounce tdue to round number syn drome gold will once again skyrocket and could reach $900 per ounce He also suggested that interest rates will go much higher on this move Dr Anthony Boeckh editor of the highly respected Bank Credit Analyst issued from Montreal suggested that interest rates will go much higher at this time He also felt that the stock market is grossly undervalued with respect to asset values and will sooner or later start to go up dramatically Morgan Maxfield young selfmade millionaire who Vt will discuss further another time was the organizer and host of the Seminar He was of the opinion that interest rates and gold prices were at their peak and would soon begin to drop Signifi ciantly Joseph Granville stock market forecaster predicted that the New York stock market was at temporary peak and would fall In fact he predicted 15 point drop for the next trading day Oc tober tIt fell only points that day On the cheerful side he felt that the market would hold above 820 on the Dow Ned Davis another stock market forecaster gave detailed presentation summed up by rather mediocre poem predicting collapse in the Dow Jones to 635 ARRAY OF TOPICS Other distinguished speakers gave well documented conclusions on currency values commodity prices stock prices and foreign investments All the presenta tions were througth researched and logically consistent within themselves Unfortunately many were also contradic tory one to another This of course leaves the participant wondering just what if anything he has learned To me the most important lesson to be derived from this entire seminar is that you can no longer appraise potential in vestment in isolation from the prevailing economic trends In the 1950s and 1960s which were characterized by relatively stable economic conditions you could evaluate the purhcase of land stocks or business purely on the merits of that par ticular investment In the 80s in view of the instability caus ed by massive govemment intervention in the conomic sphere this microeconomic research is inadequate Rather every potential investor must consider also the macroeconomic large economy fac tors which will affect his investment An investment committment that made sense last year at prime of 10 per cent may well bankrupt you at price of 14 per cent If we are to survive in an economic sense we must become familiar with the causes and effects which cause such drastic changes the examiner Frtgay Oct 12 1379 Home workshOp turns out finest bellows in world By RICHARD THOMAS Of The Examiner Build better mousetrap as the saying goes and the world will beat path to your door And if the same holds true for the common fire lace bellows then Jerry Oetelaar can expect to hear the scan of tramping feet along the driveway of his Flos Township home Since last December the 53yearold native Dutchman has been busy in the workshop behind his house about five kilometres east of Fergusonvale turning out what he calls the best bellows in the world It doesnt matter where you go you wont find bellows like these he says there are none better made To look at finished Oetelaar bellows looks much like con ventional one except for some modifications in shape such as longer handles for easier use and of course the quality of workmanship which the maker insists goes into each one Each bellows takes 32 separate operations to make and means lot of work but believe in quality Oetelaar says thats why like to work like this The flaps of the bellows are made of plywood fiveeighths of an inch thick it wont warp like pine he says and are joined together by shaped strip of leather which forms the concertinalike skin of the bellows This skin is not only glued firmly along the edges of the flaps but is held in place by several brassplated nails slightly threaded so they cant pull out Oetelaar says DOUBLE SEALS This doublestrength sealing prevents air from leaking out the sides of the bellows and helps build up better pressure he says The front flap of the bellows which is the one that moves is also covered in leather held in place by glue and nails as well as thin raised brass plate for decoration hearing old Dutch scenes The nozzle of the bellows is made of brass pipe three to four inches long which fits snugly into hole drilled into the solid wooden snout of the bellows and is held firmly in place not only by blue but by small rectangular brass plate nailed down It is so firmly fixed says Oetelaar that you can drop the bellows directly on the nozzle and it wont come lose Oetelaars real innovative improvements on the conventional bellows however are inside and cant be seen because of the leather covering The major innovation is coiled spring between the flaps and keeps them apart instead of collapsing like conventional bellows he says And after the bellows has been depressed and emptied of air says Oetelaar the action of the spring sucks more air back into the bellows quicker than youll find in other models Another feature which he says he has developed further is valvue which stops fire or smoke from being sucked back into the bellows through the nozzle The valve is simply hole about one inch in diameter drilled through the bottom flap and covered inside by leather tongue When the bellows is squeezed the tongue closes off the valve preventing air from escaping and forcing it out of the nozzle But when the bellows expands again says Oetelaar the air is sucked in through the valve rather than through the nozzle THIRD IMPROVEMENT The third major improvement which Oetellar says he has made to the bellows is small rectangular metal plate which holds the moveable top flap snugly against the bottom flap near the bellows solid wooden snout acting as hinge This hinge however does not bend in the middle and stops the top flap from being too flexible and eventually cracking the leather covering he says It is the first solid hinge and nobody else has it he adds These are the features which Oetelaar is convinced make his bellows the best available and whats more he says they wont wear out The have lifetime guarantee On the advice of his lawyer in Toronto Oetellar has patented his improved bellows with its special features You have to protect yourself he says The first ones were tough to make says the enterprising Ditt chman and it took me long time to find out how to do it the right wav Federal program will benefit Midland area federauyfunded program gram will alleviate wrong To become millionaire by your own efforts you must make some efforts But basically all you need to be successful and wealthy is freedom Without political and economic freedom you might of course get vast amount of power and in effect money But youd have to do it by climbing trampling is better on the backs of others who wouldnt be able to protest except at the risk of immediate punishment Ive gone into this in previous columns know And this time all want to do is introduce you to few selected quota tions from book Ive already mentioned recently Its William Simons Time For Truth this column Mar published by McGrawHill Its such an astounding book that even review of it would be an indictment of the present course our economy is taking Simon was Secretary of the Treasury under President Nix on Early in his book he reveals dramatically how he and others felt after their first experience on Russian soil We had been treated splendidly in our royal cocoon Somewhere outside that cocoonwe knew that there was an oppressed populacecitizens were ill clad ill housed ill fed and un free some being torn from their families and homes and hurled into prisons and insane asylums for the crime of disagreeing with our jovial hosts We exchanged our formal amplirnents made our farewells and boarded Air Force Still caught up in their official roles they continued to discuss EastWest trade Then abruptly the roar of the motor broke into our conversation and as the plane taxied down the runway we all fell silentThe ground fell away beneath us We were no longer on Soviet soil And everyone burst into applause Ill never forgetthe emotiona sense of oppression being lifted from us all who had never known oppression It was like great escape all of us 78 dignified US representatives shouted and applauded like youngsters in sheer relief flying towards freedom They were flying away from the totalitariancollectivist planned society that produces collective poverty and starva tion flying to its polar opposite free unplanned free marketsystem that produces freedom and wealth for the in dividual And you can only mix the two Simon says at the expense of loss of both freedom and of happiness Heres how he expresses it Few people would have any difficulty in understanding that if communist countries were to move in the direction of capitalism that would be sign of pro gress if we were to hear for example the Soviet Lnion was abandoning its centralized planning opening up the nation to individual initiative and the free markets most people would realize that totalitarianism was on the decline that freedom was on the rise that technological innovation and wealth could be expected to increase But most of the same peonle cannot see that when to become millionaire business notes Sells of Toronto will develop $120 million 60$torey project on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago with NeimanMarcus as principal tenant The project is being developed by Cadillacs subsidiary Cadillac Fairview of Illinois is all you need politically and economically free society starts to contract individual initiative to contract the freedom of the market political liberty is on the decline inventiveness must decay and wealth must decrease Yet if one really understands the polar systems there is nothing particularly difficult about this calculation nation that decreases its economic freedom must be less politically free And because freedom is precondition for economic creativity and wealth that nation must grow poorer It follows as night follows day If one understands the polar systems Those nations that have mixed these polar opposites of free and unfree economy of the unplanned and the planned of the individualist and the col lectivist of communism and capitalism are slowly deteriorating or rapidly rotting both socially and economically and liberty itself is corroded As he flew back from Russia the speed of his plane made Simon think of the speed with which the disease of collec tivism and the welfare state had spread to the United States And of course Canada Where the concept of freedom is corrupted as it was by President Roosevelt who equated freedom with guarantees of economic security then the fundamental meaning of freedom is lost FDR converted freedom into monetary claim on the state Political freedom means only one thing freedom from the state FDRs reversal of the relationship between the individual and the state meant that the state ceased to be viewed as mans most dangerous enemy Instead of that the state came to be considered mans tenderhearted protector and provider Statism and collec tivism were brought into the country by the back door and ironically were heraldedas the saving of free enter prise Simon proclaims He ends his book by pointingout that Seen in the full con text of human history individual liberty is bizarre new ideathe discovery that allowing millions upon millions of individuals to pursue their material interests as they choose with minimum of interference by the state will unleash an incredible and orderly outpouring of inventiveness and wealth These twin ideas individuality and the free market ap peared like dizzying flare of light in the long night of tyran ny that has been the history of the human race That light has begun to fade The mere 200 years of its existance have been too short for most people to understand the extraor dinary nature of freedom He himself came to understand this late in life was flying high over the land of one of the bloodiest tyrannies on earth But having understood it cannot let that light die out without battle It is my pro found ho that this book will inspire the same determina tion in ot ers What can one say but Amen to that Let us all join the bat tle For our lives
