Entertainment notes the examiner Wednesday Aprll 25 1979 11 little headway World War adventure film rtainment Passage makes Editor Stephen Gauer7266537 ente America looks By STEPHEN iAUIIR Of The Examiner Four year after the fall of Saigon Americas mass media find it safe to examine the consequences of the Vietnam War The two most honored films at the Academy Awards were Coming Home and The Deer Hunter both powerful statements about Americas involvement in the most con troverSial war of the century Coming Home starting Friday at the imperial looks at the war through the eyes of disabled veteran Jon Voightl and Marines wife Jane Fonda who becomes radicalized their performances in Coming Heine view of the war it doesnt judge the war in political or three men whose lives are irrevocably changed by Vietnam the war and in that sense it avoids the entire issue of why in hopeless cause Friendly Fire an ABC TV movie telecast on the weekend looks at the war from third perspective and in some ways its the most powerful film of the three The film is based on book by 71B Bryan first publish ed as series of articles in The New Yorker Bryan ex amines the war from the perspective of an Iowa family whose eldest son was killed in Vietnam by stray artillery shell fired by American forces The Mullens represent Nix ons Middle American that vast portion of the American population that supposedly supported the war and the film draws its impact from their political radicalization as they investigate the circumstances surrounding their sons gt death Carol Burnett and Ned Beatty play the Mullens so on vincingly that the film has the feel of documentary But the reason Friendly Fire is so powerful and so moving is that it focuses on one family and shows how tragically the war altered their lives When young soldier dies families are changed and the grief and bitterness particularly Mrs Mullensi that follow make political arguments about the war redundant The lessons of the war are written in the faces of two anguished and angry parents Friendly Fire is one of the fittest TV movies Ive seen on American television if it disappears after the first broad cast the network The Passage the the Imperial Backstage Malcolm McDowell pauses during his pursuit of German scientist to make the following announce ment feel good about this one the last time felt this good we took Poland in week Unfortunately for the audience theres nothing in this World War adventure film to feel good about The Passage is about as believable as Liberal campaign promise and only slightly more exciting than The Lawrence Welk Show Anthony Quinn the superb specimen of Mtditcrrancan vitality plays tough Basque shepherd who agrees to guide James Mason Patricia Neal and their two children across the Pyrenees from occupied France into Spain Malcolm Davis rejects TV controls TORONTO Pi ariadian television producers need en couragement to turn out high quality programs but more gov ernmcnt controls are not the answer Ontario Premier Wil liam Davis said Monday Ilavis told the Tanadian Association of Broadcasters that current regulatory policies are negative and intensifying the quotas and arbitrary regu lations would lead to more state stijxrvision new policy based on the use of anadian financial resources entrepreneurialI energies and creative talent is the policy he favors the tario premier said Now about MOVIE tonight IMPERIAL Thu 700 xIS McDowell is the sadistic SS captain who makes it his mis sion to catch them Quinn makes it clear right at the start that his sheep are more important to him than the safety of scientist and his helpless family Hes in this lunatic adventure strictly for the money and throughout the film its obvious hed rather be tending his animals than trying to outrun Nazis on the top of mountain Quinn doesnt have to act in The Passage hejust recycles the peasant rolc hes used countless times before IIIZLPLESS Much worse is Mason who looks either helpless or frustrated or both He also looks tired perhaps this film paid him enough money to take long vacation from escapist trash like The Passage But worst of all is Patricia Neal the fine American actress crippled by stroke in the 1960s As Masons wife shes given little to do but look cx Iiaustcd and helpless martyr who nony sacrifices herself for PATRICIA NEAL noble martyr the greater good of her family Neal looks gruesomer cadaverous in this film its disturbing that she chose such worthless role to mark her return to acting McDowell as the SS captain takes cliche and turns it into grotesque portrayal of evil Im maculate incredibly cold and brutal he likes to burn pcoplc alive McDowell is so intense he manges to inject morbid vitality in most of his scenes He stands out in The Passage only because he makes the most of every line and uses his face as though sneer and nasty smile are substitutes for good acting When the camera moves in for closeup McDowell obligingly tightens his lips and pops his eyes Nazi eccentricities havent been so broadly caricatured since Gregory Peck tried to im personate Josef Mengele in Boys from Brazil IlStAPISM The Passage is strictly secondrate escapism full of unnecessary violence and sex The climax is so ludicrous that its unintentionally funny McDowell surviving an avalancc fora final bloody en counter with Quinn and Mason The only consolation for the au dience is the location shooting in the mountains When the dialogue threatens to put you to sleep at the least you can sit back and enjoy the view MEET JOE CLARK JOE CLARK
