tho oxamlnor TuesdayApru 11 1919 kus Sometimes we get complacent Simcoe County is an area with plenty of sandy trails through scenic reforestation and many gravel concession roads Local farmers are quite ha py to allow neighboring equestrians permission to ri through planted fields if they remember to keep to the fence rows and close gates securely Effie begin to accept such good horse trails as part of our ri It may not always be this way Several years ago rod on land that is now covered by Georgian Colle hi hway in terchange now blocks one of my favorite ri ing trai All over Ontario horsemen are losing wellridden trails as new roads are paved farmland developed and limited ac cess freeways created Its our responsibility to fight to keep existing trails open both for our own use and that of our children and their families Luckily we have provincial organization working to locate map and preserve equestrian trails throughout On tario The Ontario Trail Riders Association is located in Toronto at 2240 Kingston Rd Scarborough MlN 1T9 Mavis Mc Cullum is this years president Individual membership is 55 Clout depends on interest Like many other organizations OTRAs clout depends on the interest and number of its members Your membership gives OTRAs voice more strength when the organization approaches the provincial government with trail briefs Already OTRA has mapped and opened two large trails The first the Great Pine Ridge Trail runs 200 miles from the Trent River to the Niagara Escarpment The second trail the Heritage runs 200 miles from Burl ington to Penetang Maps are available from OTRA There are contact people along each of these routes who cin make suggestions about possible accommodation for r1 ers OTRA also offers schedule of pleasure rides in various areas of central and southern Ontario and is working to locate new trails to add to its system The best way to support OTRA is to use the trails it has already opened Last year rode section of the Heritage Trail from Anten Mills to near Midland this is part of an old railway bed that formerly ran from Anten Mills to Penetangi In one area tbetween Phelpston and Elmvale was told was the first horseman through since the Heritage Ride of 1977 Other parts of this trail are frequently used and well managed But even small section of unused trail gives horsemen reputation for not backing their own organiza tions The OTRA could also use volunteers to help locate and map loops that run into the Heritage Trail Efforts being made Efforts are now being made to locate loop from near Phelpston up into Oro and north to the Bass Lake area Contact Pat Gottlieb 4873363 Hawkestonei with any sug gestions Other OTRA projects include testing the northern section of the Old Hastings Road and the QuinteHastings Trail from Madoc to Bancroft and testing route to interconnect Park reserve and an old colonization road in the Bob caygeon area Ms Gottlieb and are studying route from Rosseau to North Bay one that will roughly follow the Old Nipissing Road When you do contact the OTRA with ideas be patient Ms McMuIIum is in charge of small staff responsible for all of Ontario Trail organizers invest their own time and effort in the organization and like many riding groups are loosely afr filiated It may take some time before you get reply Be persistant Your efforts at trail building can help to create an interconnecting system we can all enjoy Youll never regret the time you spent with an equine friend searching out routes other horsemen can use and en Wu the TRA today sports shorts bench as trainer despite the fact that Chatham incurred enough penalties in the previous game to provide for suspension of the coach The club also stated in its pro test that Chathams tying goal of the game was scored after time had ran out Barrie will have to play the final game with only three defencemen after Stewart Garner received shoulder separation Monday Garner is expected to be out for
