Week is good time to look at one of Barries essential cultural facilities The Barrie Public Library that is Statistics from the librarys annual report show the librarys importance to the community The city library has 8700 adult members and 4500 child members total of 13200 of Barries 35586 people are library members Those 13200 people borrowed 285000 books and films in 1978 almost 22 books or films for each library member Those are not the statistics of city in which books are becoming obsolete On the contrary the demand for library resources has never been greater There is much more to books he library than the 100000 plus Programs range from video aids to English and French story hours to print rentals to microfilm services to special film presentations Of special importance is the separate childrens library opened in 1975 Preschool programs an outstanding Saturday program and regular classroom visits all contribute to open ing the hearts and minds of our children through the library The beautiful thing about all the library services are that they are absolutely free to Barrie Oro and Vespra residents The continued success of the library is no surprise to those familiar with the work of the dedicated imaginative library staff What may be surprising is that the Barrie Public Library is municipal service Last year the city of Barrie made grant to the library of $343385 c0vering 80 per cent of its funding needs The library of course has dreams for improving service for the future Among those dreams is new library which would house both the adult and childrens library For the present however the library richly deserves recogni tion for the fine job it has done and continues to do for our community Enough is enough Enough is enough We want you to know we are unequivocally fed up with snow cold and otherwise unspringlike weather We want spring and we want it now The problem is who can you blame for the weather Pierre Trudeau Annexation Bill Davis Nuclear scares Strikes The Post Office Whoever it is give us break spring break Dear Sir am parent of young child at tending Oakley Park School It seems to me in these times of big spending tie the Seeder pro ject that our members of city coun cil could see their way clear to spend minimal amount for in stallation of traffic lights at the in tersection of Grove and Davidson streets Surely the safety of our children deserves top priority Is it going to take fatality at that corner before our members of coun cil see the light certainly hope not concerned parent Barrie Dear Sir have spent the month of March really thinking about what have contributed towards Canadian unis ty Unfortunately find Ive done nothing concrete in the past With the election coming up on May 22 want to be as informed as is possible when vote would like to thank Mr An drew for writing the book Bilingual Today French Tomorrow He has motivated me without confusing me and opened my eyes to lot of things wasnt aware of and has shown me where lot of our tax dollars are going Our present government has been given free hand by Canadians like me just sat back and grumbled quietly while Mr Trudeau Spent millions of dollars convincing Canada that it should become French Canada Ive put up with the terrible knot get in my stomach every time go into grocery store and pay the ridiculous price to feed my family Ive watched our health plan deteriorate and Ive seen the cut backs in finances for service that are so essential to our better being trusted the government to take care of these things and they took ad vantage of me When are we Canadians going to get government that will work for letters to the editor us and not against us We need government that will give us the chance to say how we feel about thc issues that are important to us They have no right abusing the trust people have in them Now would be good time for some honest politicians to come out of the woodwork and challenge the party leaders They would soon find that we Canadians are looking for someone we can trust to run our country effectively hope that we Canadian citizens will really do our homework this election and not allow ourselves to be hoodwinked for another 11 years Yours truly Bonita Jackson Barrio Dear Sir The Barrie Architectural Conser vation Advisory Committee is try ing to reach out to all the residents of the Allandale area who have history stored in their attics and cellars We are looking for pictures of car ly times in this unique and history rich area of Barrie to give it the im portance that it deserves The early pioneers of thescparts and in par ticular those who developed the railway chose to live on the south side of the Bay close to the task at hand Anyone having either pictures of the family home or other buildings or any historical knowledge related to the existing buildings and houses in the area would be sincerely ap preciated and everyone will be con tacted at once in order that we all can share in this glorious past The history of this area must be preserved for future generations so no detail no matter how insignifi cant should be overlooked Yours truly Mrs Jean Grant Secretary Barrie Phone
