58 sighted the examiner Thursday Mar 29 1979 19A Loco deer now celebritie By BRIAN BAKER COOKSTOWN When John Sheardown Cookstown invited me to accompany him and his soninlaw Doug furry to spot where herd of 50 or more wild Virginia deer could be viewed who had never seen more than six deer in one natural herd could not imagine seeing so many deei together in one herd within the boundaries of South Simcoe In fairness to the deer which have difficult enough time surviving hard winter deep snow poacheis and attacks from dogs without having to deal with additional numbers of human observers and cars who do not know enough to stay well back tonequarter niilet from their crossing trail will not reveal the location of the site IRE TO SI After driving twelve or so miles we crossed railway tracks and drove another Loot feet part way down the grade and stopped at spot overlook mg huge swamp area with big green rye field in the foreground There they are exclaimed Mr Sheardown tokingly ad ding Gee they had said that this herd would be splitting up and moving out any day now and if that had happened you fellows would never have believed me SAW NOIIIINIE At first looking iiito the tar and lower side ol the licld bordered by swamp and bush lid not see anything Then noticed the flash of whitc tail raised against tltc rays oi the setting sun drawing attention to herd of some 23 deer gral mg on far end of the 341 acre field of rye likc Ilock of sheep Another little flock of deer six or seven were licking or eating something out on plow ed field of black muck soil Just beyond to the south We concluded this must have been field of parsnips or car rots plowed up after harvesting last fall Ity and by more and tnore deer went into the mysteriously attractive field of seemingly barren soil ItItII IIIIII£l But more deer were appear ing from out of the bush and swamp along the castcni edge of the field lhcn Mr Shear down directed our attention straight down the road quarter of mile to where first one decr then another was cautiously emerging front the tangle swamp on the north side of the road standing for mo ment listening intently then trotting across the road and jumping the ditch and walking or trotting along the bottotii ot the field or through the bush to join the main herd group lur tlicr south in the open field the line stag which Mr Sheardown estimated to weigh close to 243 pounds stood part way up the side of the road for several minutes its legs stitfly braced head proudly erect waiting listening sccntmg the air for possible danger obeying deeply seated survival in stincts Seen through distance shrinking binixrulars what beautiful sight it made VUIR STOOI lt SIIHC At one time four stood at the side of the road and another just at the edge of the bush at one time waiting to make the road crossing Most of the deer were the nor mal buff to grey color Vllll hint of orange but three in diViduaI showed distinct blackish phase of coloration In light phase or dark they blended in surprisingly well with the low key colors of the swamp and btisli oiin on Illt plain black niiick soil ot the plowed ticld did they stand otit moreprominently lhicc tinics Ilic closer dcci look oll and ran turtlicr towards the south oncc whcii two noisy itiotorcyclcs startctl up ottcc when small red lorcign car that had litcu stan tlttig loo closc lo lllt lllIlIl cross ing trail started up and oiicc when an airplane circled overhead making an unforgetr table sight as they galloped off all their tails raised like white banners FEW MORE SIRAGUIJCRS few more stragglers cross ed the road ne of the last looked normal when it walked but when it started to trot it could be seen to have slight limp perhaps sprain perhaps an old gunshot wound Lets hope it will completely recover during the summer of abundant food supply As dusk fell We all made one last count then recount and came up with grand total of The night before only 34 had been seen but the night before that Sui had been counted ur hunting guide tip north Parry Sound Iistricti would never believe this coin mented Mr Sheardown You just dont see the likes of this up there Most likely these deer stayed in natural decryard somewhere in the bush lor warmth and safety am sure that no wolf would at tempt to attack so large hcrd This is sight you would expect to see only once in lifetime if ever IIMIK IIIIICI DOWN The following evening took my father lllll down to see the spectacle of so many deer We arrived about five thirty no There was not deer in sight Perhaps they had already broken up and moved otit tor the summcr watched the road crossing the most logical placc thought Dad saw them tirst tiosh he said pointing to tlic south in thc opposite ltrtcr ltoii to an area of marsh grass and rccds llcrc they conic Door control Fisher Stove have chosen the Fisher secondary combustion the flames Triplesealed Spindraft Take this short guided tour through And see for yourself why scores little osh Well they look for all the world like flock ot sheep coming SIEII ANIMALS And so they did as score of the animals poured out through gap into the field of black soil As if they had received the signal deer began to cross the road Irom the bush quarter mile to the north The total count for the even ing was to be 46 at one time but others had moved off to the south and were lost to view in the marsh grass MURE ARRIVED This evening more people several carloads had arrived to view the pretty and rare sight Included were the urrys Nobody wanted to disturb the deer and one fellow expressed the thoughts of us all that he did not want to shoot deer other than legally in season Dougs father Bill urry noted that in contrast to the deer that are seen up north at this time of the year half starv ed and in rough shape these deer were in great condition local trapper who Ill season has successfully shot deer with bow and arrow noted that deep snow and local dogs are the decrs worst enemies Deer that have overwintered on twigs and bark and dead grass all low in energy and protein do not have the energy or stamina to run away from or ward off the attacks of dogs especmlly when the snow is deep Vlilt IRICITY Sltilll very pretty sight was that of half dozen leer ganiboling around and around in circle at the edge of the bush lwo ttiorc recred up at each other on their hind legs
