new meaning By BARR FORBES The Examiner People in Kingston think were nuts They are convinced that everyone in this peaceful little ty of Barrie is certifiably moonstruck and they havent even heard of the Keinpenfelt Kelly look tourist theres monster in the bay seaiii They are thinking these ugly thoughts because of reports that filtered back to them from minor hockey game played at Barrie arena March 18 In frontpage re ort iii the Kingston WhigStandard parents players andpeven the president of the Kingston Township Minor Hockey Association told of how brutal Barrie United Rubber Workers Major Bantams team got all upset and mercilessly injured four Kingston Township players Its unfortunate that anyone should endeavor sports or otherwise but to hear the Kingston people youd think the Barrie Minor Hockey Association was drugcrazed motorcycle gang on skates The four IIyearolds were taken to hospital as precau tionary measure Barrie team officials and others at the game said the players werent seriously hurt and were fell ed by clean btxlychecks Others including some Barrie observers say the thWs were out of line and at tempted to injure their opponents If the latter occurred if the llRWs were unable to face loss and turned on the Kingston team then there is serious warp in our attitude If you lose your job you dont go pullr ing chairs out from under people on the way out But if the players were hurt accidentally injured by bixlycheck then another problem has occurred prohlein which may have occurred countless times before and may have caused irreversible damage to the game Much was made by the Kingston moms and dads about how such viciousness has driven kids from the game and about how hockey like they play it in Barrie is fit only foraiiimals If nothing terrible happened however the criticism is un get hurt in any justified But the criticism stands and people who fear for the welfare of their kids may be taking them out of hockev or worse not entering them in to the game lest they should meet Barrie team Theres no telling how many topnotch skilled youngsters have been cut off from the game because of what may be overdramat iled drivel from excitable hockeywatchers To parents thinking about giving kid crack at hockey ltespite what you read the game is not seething with stick sw inging savages ready to pounce on your child and cut him to pieces The kid may be bumped jostled and may even lose tooth In the course of his childhood he will experience far worse things with far less reward on the streets and in the schoolyard The game of hockey has lot to offer child it would be crime if some kids are prevented from entering the sport because of few misinterpreted occurrences Far worse crime even than bodycheck from balmy young resident of Barrie leerhunting is getting to be quite precarious sport for some Ontario Out of Doors magazine reports that limiters have been slipping into whitetail deer habitat near Meaford in fourwheeled drive vehicles dirt bikes you name it to get shot at the beasts The problem is the 18000 acres of old farm orchards which the deer call home is owned by the federal depart ment of national defence The area is part of tank range and the intruders are trespassers pretty brave ones to boot Says the mag They ignored warnings by army officials to stay out because of restricted areas near the deer range where unexploded ordnances still he on the ground lersonally dont think deerhunting can reasonably be called sport unless the hunter can chase the animal down and wrestle him into submission but if these guys are going to have to tiprtoe through mine field that sort of evens things up You mean you dont know what Sports Forum is IIlltl John raw le oftllYrFI Stevcripps of the Bar ric Flyers and Grant Georgians archers straight shooters all By GARRY FORBlZS Of The Examiner onccntration is what it takes One slight fliiicb at crucial moment will send an arrow whining three feet over the target into the cement wall forcing Herb loutier into the equipment room to repair the damage with his magic arrow straightener And the number of times its USHI is good indicator for the Georgian ollege Athletic Director of how the 30 participants in the schools archery program are lttgltSSlllg They are reports loutier with smile progressing very well As in any sport requiring hiin degree of concentration however there will be mistakes Especially under the pressuix of competition such as Wednesdays Georgian in traniural archery funds Most of the dozen students involved in the totals were part of the Georgian varisty team which won the Ontario ol leges Athletic Association chaiiipioiisbip at Mohawk ollege earlier this month lbough they upset Mohawk for the provincial title loutici says the Georgian archers didnt shoot as well as they the scores were lower Its funny thing loutier said are able to And in Wednesday competition most of Its one of those sports in which concentration is the key There are so many things to consider before shot is made that under the pressure of competition you tend to make mistakes which you otherwisewouldnt make Its that ultimate concentration that ability to make everything come together at precisely the right moment that loutier has been helping the students work on All but handful of the students in the archery program were new to the sport when the intramural season began last September Initially they were supplied with basic target archery equipment fibreglas bows and wooden arrows but have progressed to the more advanced cqinpnicnt which helped them earn the OtAA crown Not so advanced however that the rtxpiirement of ultimate concentration is uiidcicm phasiled The students in the program have excellent ability loutici said And the need for concentrition cannot be stressed enough So we allow them to develop that need through the use of equipment which doesnt make it easy to neglect the basics BEAVER Al AtTttIl 4031mm Sl
