Points to ponder Youth sensitive to failed dreams By DOROTHY KILIIURN Twelveyearold Linda burst into the kitchen with her news Mother have been chosen to be cheerleader dream had come true she was chosen for two happy years to be cheerleader for her Her when the Pharaohs of Egypt were promi nent for their prosperity His brothers en vied him so muchlthey sold him into slavery he was made to serve jail sentence on trumpt up charge and friend whom he had helped in jail forgot to school That night she was too excited to present his petition to the king and left sleep properly For days she talked of nothing else while the pom poms bounced and jolted with her enthusiastic efforts Then came the day they were to cheer the boys basketball team on to glorious victory She left for school in his spirits When she came home from school the first thing her mother asked was How was the game Linda The boys said Ah shut up and sit down her thin little crestfallen voice replied How keenly sensitive is youth as dreams crack and crumble As we grow older we manage to cushion our expectations of life but lack of experience in youth makes them very vulnerable to lifes hurts Seventeen year old Joseph had more im to languishlin jail another two years How did young Joseph take all this Did he turn against society and cream that he had had raw deal No his rela tionship with God was so close so in timate that he was able to forgive those who had illtreated him and say that all that had befallen him had been allowed by God He had faith to see the good that had been worked out Resource entre Reflection Repentance Re joicing Those three Words sum up the season of Lent for me Life if often described as rate race not because we run from one place to another but because we seem to scurry endlessly here and there in ac tivity that makes so sense This is the age of halfread page and the quick hash and the mad dash Lent is chance for each of us to slow down and catch our spiritual breaths It is chance to settle in for special time of Snakeinvades church organ ELMWOOI nt rCIi Perhaps the snake that crawled into church organ Sunday was an ancestor of that infamous serpent that caused Adam and Eve so much trouble Maybe it just wanted to hear that Garden of Eden story again when it slithered between the foot pedals and disappeared into the bowels of the organ Whatever it was up to it gave Karen Procknow 21 organist at St Johns Lutheran Church bit of fright when it peered around the corner of the organ But she said she resisted the temptation to scream and pretended nothing was wrong Needless to say held my feet up for the rest of the ser vice It took members of the con gregation practising the biblical virtue of patience morevthan an hour after the ser vice to coax the snake from its hiding place in the church in this community about 40 kilometres south of Owen Sound Weekly meditation God one spirit not three By REV JOHNSON United Pentecostal hurch Truth is being sought today not merely to establish doc trinal position but to know for sure whom we are to worship as God and how to establish right relationship with Him God is Spirit John 424 Nothing morenothing less There is only one Spirit Ephe Sians 45 He is the creator and father of everything That one God was manifested in flesh Timothy 1511 as son who was Jesus hrist Luke 135 the flesh iasnt iod it was des son The Bible never speaks of God the Son But it has plenty to say about the Son of God Matthew 829 Matthew 1133 Matthew 1616 Matthew 2754 Jesus was born of virgin fathered by God the Spiriti Matthew 118 therefore he was both human and divine This qualified him to be our Savior our mediator 1liniothy2i The Holy Spirit is iiol another separate being or person distinct from 1th the Father There is one Spirit Ephesians is The Holy Spirit is the ind each happening of his life and say That was the way that God wanted it Such an attitude is only possible as we truly believe that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose Romans 28 through the society during the year to assist in overseas Bible responsibilities in fun ding world Bible work We can subsidize transla tion publication and distrith tion of the scriptures in developing countries only if Candians and other Christians in the developed world increase their support can think of no greater contribution to international peace and good will said II McMillan also general secretary of the anadian Bible Society Lent for rejoicing as well as repentance prayer and contemplation Where have we been Where are we going on our faith journey What have been valley experiences of frustra tion and doubt When did we feel as though no mountain top would be high enough to match that special encounter with the reality of God Lent is primarily time for reflection about our relation ship with God When we hear or read again about ind who loved us so much that Christ came to live and to die and to rise again we lift our eyes to the cross once more We wonder about the significance of it all Shift gears Look at life Hold it up to the light measure it and consider the meaning of all its ingredients Lent is time for reflection dominating mood of Lent ll repentance of sorrow for oncs sins and for the sins of all human beings Ihs happens most readin when we are reminded of exactly what God has done for us The image oi Jesus on the cross his stiffer ing pain and agony moves us to regret our shortcomings The more we look to the cross the more we re aware of how we fall far short of Gods love With that rcalilation we repent of our sins Divided minds sometimes oc cure during Lent On the one hand we cannot help feeling sorrow and anger at what oc curred Jesus was mistreated misjudged and cruelly tor tured although he was inno cent At the same time we also react with joy Hard as it must have been on Jesus the crucifixion brings us nothing but good Christ took our sins on himself accepting the punish ment which should have been ours and as result we have been forgiven redeemed wetting presence of God in born again
