Harry Barron said apathy the main reason coupled with declining revenue forced the cancellar tion He said snowmobile races were the main attraction and needed large purses to attract the best racers All money from admission to the races and the Wintcraina dance was used to furnish these prizes The last three years we had snowmobile races we were in the red Barron said Last year when we cut them out we didnt get the crowd and just broke even Since the cancellation only four people have asked Barrin about Winterama he said Interest is not very great he said He said the hamber is giving Winterama rest to poll public opinion Barron stressed the cancella tion is not permaincnt and the Three men killed in accident BROWN HILL Three men were killed Iwlnesday in headon collision on Highway indepen dent merchants would benefit froin it But Sims said he moved from his Dunlop Street location to Hell Farm Road because it was too difficult to operate downtown Parking is major problem he says He says inalls do well because there is unlimited free parking available Metered parking should be eliminated he says If the city needed the revenue merchants could be charged fee for money lost lhcyvc done away with lot of metered parking many cities in the US because they feel its decided disad vantage he says Sims says the city is also not doing enough to encourage growth of its downtown area He says Barrie should pro vide some incentive for persons moving into vacant buildings downtown Doug Renault owner of Bar rie TV and Appliances on Dunlop Street says the pro jccl is not needed because downtown is not dying He says that business is okay at his store He says owners willing to improve stores will succeed and stay in business He says residential develop ment is needed downtown George Kelvin owner of the Barrie Mattress Factory on Dunlop Street East says he thinks the project is fair All know about it is what read in the newspapers he says But dont think would be affected personally by the project Doug Greenwood owner of Grecnwoods oats and Dresses Ltd on Dunlop Street says he doesnt object to the project but would prefer more housing downtown Residential development would be more valuable to downtown then anything else he says He says that by adding apart ment buildings people would be within walking distance of downtown He said objects to provincial governments involvement in the scheme He said private developers should be handling the project all the way along School buses crowded present hazard trustees Simcoe ounty school buses are over crowded and recom mendations should be accepted to correct the problem says an ad hoc board of education com mittee The committee presented list of busing guidelines to the board at meeting Iednesday The guidelines must be review ed by the budget committee before being accepted or re jected There should be maximum of 34 high school students on 72 passenger school buses says the report ommiltec chairman Frank lrothcro says school bus capacity is determined by allot ting lilrinch wide section of seat for each passenger Since many high school students take up more room than 11 inches filling buses to their official capacity means some have to stand Prothero says This could be dangerous in case of accidents he says The report also says high school students should be pick ed up at home by school buses no earlier than 7110 It says elementary school students should be dropped off at school no earlier than 8243 am or 8110 am it by com mutcr bus Some students are picked up and dropped off earlier than
