Unit Barrie Ont MN 3V7 detoxification centre in Orillia serving Simcoe and Muskoka counties may close its doors next month due to lack of funds says its director Hugh Stout director of the centre at 144 Colbourne St West said today it may close permanently on March 31 unless $55000 can be found to cover operating costs The centre which opened in 1976 to treat alcohol related pro blems in the counties has been operating under Canada Works program for the past year Stout said Stout said 75 per cent of the Tendering process Alleged irregularities worry aldermen Alleged regularities in the tendering of recent city con tract has concern for Barrie city alderman concerned Ald Jim Shirley told council contract for construction work at the pollution control centre should be annulled because the company did not follow tendering rules General committee recom mended last week Con struction Ltd be awarded the work for $541558 The project includes the construction of new administrative building and road repair work at the site But Aid Shirley said the com pany had not told the commit funds required will go to the salaries of the centres eight member staff If alternative methods of fun ding could be found the centre would probably operate on budget of $45000 he said In the past three years more than 10000 volunteer hours tee the name of the sub contractors it would be dealing with within 48 hours In addition Aid Shirley said the company had changed the completion date for the scheme after the contract had been awarded Ald Shirley said council would be setting precedent if have been logged in at the cen tre but it is difficult to find volunteers on 24hour seven day per week basis Stout said The director said fund drive is currently underway but similar efforts in the said The greater percentage of cases coming to the centre are from outside Orillia Stout said The centre is counting heavi ly on industry to respond to its appeal for funds he said 90an rillia detox centre couldclose An appeal has been made to area hospitals but they are also faced with the financial squeezes from cutbacks on their own budgets said Stout But whatever comes in will keep the centre alive he said Part of threetier process for rehabilitation the centre operates in close conjunction with the problem drinking pro gram at the Penetanguishene Mental Health Centre and halfway house in Orillia said Stout The mental health centre and the half way house receive fun ding from the departments of health and social and com munity services respectively but the detoxification centre does
