Nova Book Shop Is he really science fiction freak Of course he replies Thats all read What would be doing here elsewise mean itd be terrible Black admits he also reads comic books but theyre not FANS The first chocolate fans were the Aztecs of Mexico who mixed the candy with hot peppers and spices ITS NOT JUST BARK The General Grant tree in the USs Sequoia National Park could supply enough wood to build 50 sixroom houses as serious or cerebral as sci ence fiction He has personal and un touchable collection of about 7000 comic books No one sees them and no one touches them he says They steadily increase in value every year His comic book rack which holds about 80 titles helps bring people into the store Comic books differ from sci ence fiction he says For one thing science fic tion has never been dealt with very well in the comics There may be star wars epics and space operas in the comics but theres rarely comic without slugemout fight it scene When you specializein selling science fiction and comic books is it enough to make living Black shrugs Seems to be Im not suffering HARD TO DEFINE But what is science fiction Well he replies Science fic tion is hard thing to define because it covers lot past seience fiction future science fiction past fantasy future fantasy the Lordoftheangs type fantasy swordand sorcery fantasy timetravel fantasy There are so many subgen res within the category of seir ence IlLllOIl Speculative fiction is probably better word for it But seience fiction is the name It got stuck With The stories extrapolate on future themes and the con sequences on society Every thing is an extrapolation of cur rent ideas into the future It doesnt have to rely on science Most of the people whove been writing it for long time arestill at it But he remarks you can take science fiction all the way back to Homer or the fairy tales Jules Verne stuff HG Wells stuff thats all sctence fiction One of the biggest problems for authors he says is writ ing far enough ahead so that the plots are beyond the realm of what people would believe lot of Wellss stuff has come true and Vernes too Who buys science fiction All kinds of peple young old men women boys and girls weirdos too Not as many women The people who buy it are about 70 per cent men Are there heroes and villains of course There has to be some conflict in the plots CTHTBIE TV BASIC SERVICE store is heaven for fans Of sciencefiction any combination of conflict Its all been done Try and find new idea in science fiction thats the big problem As for the heroes there was time when they were Virgin pure but that was in the older science fiction Tarzan in the comics never got it on In the Mars series with John Carter some things were implied like they kissed maybe In the more modern stuff anything goes Certain books have sex certain books dont There can be heroic heroes or others nuch less than heroes They can be ants on galactic scale Anything you can think of is probably there Black notes there are almost no Canadian authors Van Vogt was born in Canada long time ago but doesnt live here any more There have been couple of collections of Cana dian scienCe fiction but they didnt sell Big name authors sell Its very rare that some new person breaks in and it has to be somebody very very good BARRIES COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING STATION FEB 25 MAR Sunday Feb 25 l1l0 TALENT GALLERY 35
