Hodgson looking at Halifax team as new franchise TORONTO CPi Bill Hodg son former owner of Toronto Argonauts is seeking return to the fold of the Canadian Football League Hodgson has indicated in letter to the CFL his interest in renewing his membership as owner of new franchise to be located in Halifax CFL commissioner Jake Gaudaur said at news con ference Thursday Hodgsons letter expressed very clear interest in establishing CFL franchise in Halifax The letter was considered at league executive committee meeting Thursday morning and Gaudaur said We will re spond to that letter to encour agehimtopursueit Halifax has been mentioned Kings tie Habs 22 MONTREAL tCP Centre Marcel Dionne of Los Angeles spoiled Jacques Lemaires op portunity to become returning hero Thursday night as his 42nd goal of the current National Hockey League season earned the Kings 22 thirdperiod tie with Montreal Canadiens The Canadiens had taken lead on powerplay goal by Lemaire midway through the second period goal ad vantage that appeared could stand up because of the disjointed play by both teams Lemaire 33 had missed Montreals last 27 games since he suffered dislocated shoulder Dec and coach Scotty Bowman was obviously intent on working him back into thelineupgently Bowman put Lemaire out with wingers Pat Hughes and Bob Gainey fora start leaving young Pierre Mondou between Guy Lafleur and Steve Shutt But when Los Angeles defen ceman Randy Manery drew penalty at 1107 of the second period Lemaire was out on the power play and it was Lafieur the leagues leading pointget ter who fed him the pass from behind the net to beat young Mario Lessard in the Kings net The assist brought Lafleurs total to 91 points on 40 goals and 51 assists After scoreless first period defenceman Brian Engblom gave the Canadiens 10 lead at 939 and Lemaire scored his goal two minutes later Rookie winger harlie Sim mer brought the Kings to within one goal at 1300 setting the scene for Dionnes tying goal on clean breakaway at 408 of the final period Montreal net minder Michel Larocque was the victim of Dionnes sharp shot although Larocque had stopped the Los Angeles centre in similar situation in the pre vious period as the possible site of fifth Eastern Conference team sev eral times in recent years but the most serious bid considered came from group in London Ont While admitting there was little in the way of concrete proposal made to the CPL meetings the commissioner said Hodgsons letter implied that with the leagues approval he would have more definite proposal to put to the league owners within few months possibly at the semiannual meetings in May in Montreal Mr Hodgson felt that by then he would be in position to formally apply for fran chise Gaudaur said FRANCHISE DESIRABLE2 Gaudaur said it was highly desirable for the Eastern Con ference to acquire fifth fran chise as fifth club would serve not only to expand the league but shorten the season by two weeks since it would enable all teams to play at least once week during the season Under the existing scheduling with nine teams each club is forced to miss at least one period of two weeks without game twice during the season before and after the Thanksgiving Day weekend Gaudaur felt it was im portant for the CPL to expand to Halifax Off the top of my head might feel that the population wouldnt support team in Halifax said Gaudaur But you could say that about Re gina too in other developments plans for complete interlocking schedule by 1980 were shelved temporarily Gaudaur said the proposal will be put on the agenda for the semiannual meetings in May ADOPTS RLIE CHANGE The CFL adopted rule change regarding waiver procedures Gaudaur told news confer ence that in future any player waived without recall must re main with the club that claims him for at least two games Without mentioning specifics Gaudaur said some clubs have abused the waiver procedures in the past in an effort to improve their positions by having another player return prematurely from the injuredlist He explained that deals were worked out with the club that had first claim to the player on waivers to trade him back al most immediately
