on tho oxnmlnor Eulay no 10 1a Instantly likeable love songs highlight new Murray album By MICHAEL LAWSON The Canadian Press On her latest album Anne Murray does not really diverge from her usual style of music interpretation One can only assume therefore that the albums title New Kind of Feeling is reflection of the singers newfound status on the in temational market Its not the first time Canadas foremost pop songstress had blazed international trails Prior to last year she had scored outside Canada with the hit tunes Snowbird and Dannys Song But those songs hap pened five to 10 years ago almost ancient history in the world of show business It was with her 1978 release Lets Keep It That Way and the accompanying singles Walk Right Back and You Needed Me that Anne started percolating as never before Henew album continues that momentum Several weeks before New Kind of Feeling hit the market its first single started making waves over the air In fact that single just Fell In Love Again may singlehandedly guarantee the albums success When the song first made the charts of the American trade publication Billboard it was positioned almost halfway up the Top 100 listin 57th spot Two weeks later it had reached the 305 with no sign of slowing down Just Fell In Love Again is only one of several potentials for singles action The album is collection of easylistening tunes basically middleoftheroad but reade acceptable to the formats of both pop and country radio programming For those fans who insist that Anne Murray is country and western act several tracks like Rainin In My Heart and He Cant Help It if Hes Not You hold extra appeal in their smooth steel guitar accom paniment Much of the album is made up of instantly likeable love ballads the type of song best suited to Annes characteristically easy style such as Adam Mitchells Yucatan Cafe and the Robert Batteau composition Take This Heart tune colored with pseudogospel vocal backing One cut especially worthy of mention is Heaven ls Here vocal duet with brother Bruce Murray The song may have been included as subtle promotion for Bruces awn album to be released soon by CBS All plugs aside Heaven Is Here can be readily appreciated The song is rich both in melody and its fine execution NEW KIND OF FEELING Murray Capitol SWI HMS If the music industry were to hand out an award for most lopsided album of the year Eddie Moneys latest Life For the Taking undoubtedly would be prime contender Anne What hurts the album most is its lack of balance The listener must endure 20 minutes of unimaginative heavy rock on Side One before reaching the more tempered more interesting work of the second side Theres no question that Money is capable of delivering good product but why does he gamble on his audiences degree of patience More to the point why did producer Bruce Botnick not shuffle the deck before dealing Moneys weak attempt at hard rock glimmering only occasionally with the searing attack of Jimmy Lyons guitar would have been far more bearable had it been sandwiched between the lighter songs onSideTwo Another blow On his impressive debut album Money shared the sax work with Tom Scott talented performer regarded by some as the best woodwind artist in contemporary music Life For the Taking the horn work is left totally up to Scott OK so far but whereas Scott is credited with coarranging the horn parts with Money the arrangements themselves allow little opportunity for the reed mans talents to shine Positive tracks on the album include Maybe Im Fool and Maureen both good beat tunes and the soulful Call On Me with fine blues guitar in the Roy Buchanan vein LIFE FOR THE TAKING Money Columbia 3559a Eddie Kate Bush is one of those artists who find favor in both Britain and Canada but in explicably cannot break ground in the ever important US market Its Americas loss At age 20 the British singer has two albums to her credit both of which display her power as musician and composer Her latest Lionheart is in fact progression of her debut The Kick Inside Theres something readily appealing about an artist of Kates calibre The soprano vocals suggest innocence yet the imageryzehind the compositions is deep and knowing In one breath she Sings about God the head of the Good Soul Department but the next brings to the fore her feelings of jeal ousy and gives way to her deep thesis on the purpose of life While she easily swings into song of childlike Innocence like her tune In Search of Peter Pan that innocence soon fades to feeling of universal depression Kate Bush was born bit too late to rank among the giants of contemporary poetry but shes still working at it After all some markets have yet to discover her LIONIIEART Kate Bush apitol 6454 Peter Anthony Andrews of NBC and the topic is How We Made It To the Top then Youve got Harris and C0 Americas first hourlong primetime dramatic television series about handsom blue collar father of African descent who is widowed in Detroit and moves his five children to California where he raises them on traditional virtues while struggling to support them by driving towtruck co owned with an AngloSaxon partner around the San Fernan do Valley Former Los Angeles Rams San Francisco 49ers split end poet and artist Bernie asey stars as Mike Ilarris the widowed father trying to raise his kids Louise and Harry Foreman Louise Walden and James Luis who own service station in the Valley Occasionally Louise becomes surrogate mother for the Harris children Comic relief is given by Mikes day dreaming cousin Charlie Adams comedian Stu Gilliam and Charlies more sensible wife Angie Carol Tillery Banks The Harrises Louise and Harry and Angie and Charlie all live in the bluecollar sec tion of the Valley Thats because concept originators Robertson and An drews come from struggling bluecollar families with tradi tional American virtues though they now labor most lucratively and lunch somewhat luxuriously in the San Fernando Valley which hardly makes them different from the other Nielsen watching types What makes Robertson and Andrews different is that theyre black What makes Harris and Co noteworthy is that its an ordinary series about ordinary black folks with ordinary pro blems with ordinary solutions aimed at ordinary viewers TOP RATINGS After the Harris and Co pilot Love is Not Enough captured top ratings in June of 1978 network officials sat on it until November before giving Robertson the goahead to pro duce four episodes which still havent been scheduled though NBC says the show will air sometime this spring in the it pm primetime slot At one point the situation was so tense over the networks pro crastination that Detroit Free Press columnist hris Stochr lambasted NBC for allegedly taking the Harris and Co concept and ordering another one just like it developed but white version And Robertson was quoted as saying But now see this show with the little kid who HEARING TEST EVERY YEAR IS SOUND IDEA My HEARING AID SERVICE The Downtown Contra Ho W51 Ivh Hon 7371 Mon to Fri 10in 530pm Sat Evenings by appointment talks smart Different Strokes and what does that show portray The rich white man adopts two little black kids Its the old stereotype of the absentee father and the benevolent white man taking over the real fathers place But thats the kind of show that gets full commitment from NBC while Harris and Co which is different way of presenting blacks just keeps getting shuffled further and further back That was before the network gave its approval for the four episodes All is hearts and Nielsens once again And Robertson and Andrews are casting corporate Valentines at everyone in sight HARPERS PHARMACY LTD SPECIAlISIS IN Ostomy
