Leaving for Egypt in May the oxamlnor Wodnomy Fob 1979 15 Egyptian proect photographer in his veins has archeolog By NANCY FIGUEROA Of The Examiner Archeology is like the theatre once youre on stage you always want to be on stage It gets into your blood says Gerry Allaby member of the Ontario Ar cheological Societys Simcoe County chapter Allaby also humanities teacher at Georgian College in Barrie says archeology has been flowing in his blood for the past three years and he loves it In May his love for ar cheology will take him and his wife Trudy to Egypt the arclieologists paradise The Allabys and 68 others under the direction of Dr Donald Redford of the University of Toronto will spend May June and July excavating the Akhenaten project The Akhenaten temple says Allaby was built in aboxt 1372 BC in Thebes the royal capital 560 km south of the Nile Delta Akhenaten was the nami assumed by Amenophis of Egypt when he came to tht throne in 1375 BC REVOLUTIONARY INTER Since 1966 investigations have uncovered the revolu no longer worship multitude of gods but would worship only one god the Sun Disk Rehorakhte Within his first year as Pharaoh he outlawed all animal representations of the deity and he later erected monuments to the Sun Disk Akhenatens successors levelled the temple and the monuments Dr Redford and his group are trying to learn about the temple and monuments by piecing together the fragments In an article in the December 1978 iddue of cientific American Dr Redford internationally known as the foremost ex pert on the Akhenaten period refers to Akhenaten as perhaps the most attrac tive of all ancient rulers IRONY IN FAME Dr Redford says however there is irony in Akhenatens fame because Akhenatens actions made little more than ripple in the stream of Egypts long ancient history The work of Dr Redford and members of his group like Allaby could change Akhenatens fame Allabys job on the project was sports editor of The Ex aminer in Barrie As chief photographer the site Allaby will be responsible for photographing the groups daytoday findings His wife Trudy will be his assis tant and will do most of the darkroom work Mrs Allaby will do the darkroom work for all black andwhite film on the project site Color film however and all final prints will be made in Canada Temperature control is better in Canada than Egypt for printing film said Allaby HEAT DIFFICULTY Allabys work will be detailed and because of ex treme heat difficult at times The sun will cause lighting contrasting and shading problems he said At high noon temperatures often climb above 60 140 Ft One of the major problems however will be with sand You can really ruin camera if sand getsinit he said The heat will also cause ex treme losses of body moisture The body is con tled water and Egyptian beer to drink Their Ileer is different from ours but it is nice he said Actually it seems more potent than Canadian beer N0 SLN TAN Constantly working in hot temperatures many people would expect the Allabys to return to Barrie with fan tastic tans but he says that wontbe so When were out working well be covered up as though were in the high arctic he said You have to protect yourself from the sun Although his air flight and photographic expenses will be paid for Allaby warns that archeology isnt field for anyone interested in mak ing money Theres no money in it he said You do it for the sheer enjoyment of it Some people however wouldnt call it enjoyment In addition to his work for Dr Redford Allaby will also take photographs for use in teaching his art history and humanities courses Georgian College has sup ported his work on the Akhenaten Project Allaby stantly losing moisture but no longer considers his in tionary act ions of will be as chief you cant drink the water terest in photography and ar Akhcnaten photographer He says he he said cheology as hobby but as At the start of his reign he developed his interest in Allaby noted however part of his overall career as ruled that his people would photography in 1970 when he there would be plenty of bot teacher Archeology isnt good field for anyone Interested In making there is little escaping it in May Allabys love for archeology money says Gerry Allaby humanities teacher at Georgian Col takes him on threemonth trip to Egypt where he will work as of iege and member of the Simcoe County chapter of the Ontario Ar ficiai photographer for group excavating the Akhenaten proect cheological Society But once archeology gets into your blood dating back to l3728C Examiner Photo
