Eortiingi notes Jacques affair mishondled By DAVID FULLER Of The Examiner its open season on referees say the Barrie Flyers it should be open season on people who dont think minute before they open their yaps including presidents of provincial hockey associations The spark that set off Flyers comments including Ti game in Barrie last week Examiner reporter Garry Forbes was at the game and referee getting punched by player and beiiclrcleariiig incident involving spectators in the stands at the Barrie arena His story in Tuesdays edi reported what he saw tion reflected what he saw The same cannot be said for several other peoples reports on what happened SllIVE RIIIS protests decision humorous letter sent to Ontario Hockey Association presi dent Larry Bellisle by the Flyers was the incident involving Jeff Jacques of Welland Sunys and referee Bill Howes at Bellisle who made cer tain comments in radio interview concerning the incident said there was no relation between what he was told happened and what he was told ap peared in the paper All of that is hearsay and certainly not the stuff intelligent decisions are made of Jacques received 12 game suspension for at tacking Howes decision made over the phone without an official report from the referee The only thing the HA president is supposed to base his deci sion on as he admits himself is the referees report Once the report was made Bellisle then said his decision would stand and more quick talkers but slow thinkers lined up to say their piece Grant Wade publicity director and assistant general manager for the Flyers fired off letter requesting Relli sles resignation peppering it with spicey phrases that guarantee it wont be taken seriously from the start Iim Lemieux convener for the newly named Canadian In ternational Hockey League said Thursday before talking with Bellislc 12gamc suspension was not enough and that as form referee he would probably have given stiffer penalty Gentleman gentleman what hell of way to carry on tccording to the HA manual the president may susv pend the person who attacks an official for one year or more He may only choose to suspend him for games as Bellisle did The president has the authority to decide and he apparent ly has it without any proviso that he take into account what prc ious presidents have done By giving Jacques only 12 game suspension and doing it iii the manner he did Bellislc left himself open toall kinds of LIllltlSlll Steve tripps and Gord oates Flyers management chose not to endorse the letter sent to Rcllisle yet they persist in mounting campaign to have the suspension reviewed for the sake of other referees The question is why is there no procedure for dealing with this in an equitable way Why should people be driven to make all manner of ac cusations and decisions based on second anti third hand stories The intario Hockey ssociation should not leave the deci sioii oi an incident ot this severity to one man and give him the authority to base his decisions on whatever rulcvof thuinli he may choose to guide him An enraged hockey player is no joke especially when he thinks he can attack officials The handling of the Jeff
