their music rare combination in any ensemble but rather their ability to cap tivate an audience for two hours relying solely on percussion technicqucs to create music The sixmember ensemble proved Friday night at Barrie Central Collegiate why theyve earned worldwide reputation as remarkably talented and creative group of musicians they can create their own world of sound emotion and mood within the limited musical framework of percussion Percussion means much more for Nexus than drums and cymbals The group has collected bewildering variety of in struments from around the world bells chimes gongs and drums of every size and description The arrangement of in struments onstage during Nexus per formance creates striking visual effect that complements the groups music the musicians move freely from instrument to instrument and the way they move and the way they strike their instruments is as fascinating to watch as the sounds they create are fascinating to hear ONTEMIORAR WORK The concert opened with contemporary work for percussion Music for Pieces of Wood The six musicians created patterns of rhythm using tuned pairs of wooden dowels The result was strikingly clear and sparse study in syncopation per cussive version of musical counterpoint and the precise coordination of the six parts was an illustration of the ensembles flawless technical ability The second work freeform improvisa tion using virtually all the instrumean col lected by Nexus provided sharp contrast to the opening piece Precise and regular rhythms gave way to freer less deliberate approach to percussion The musicians scented to be playing with sound and rhythm the way child might experiment with an instrument Instrumean were struck plucked rubbed and hammered the music created had mysterious almost unearthly quality full of eccentric rhythms and sudden crescendos The music seemed to work by surprise and by chance but always worked to create mood and sense of unity Like rhythmic undercurrent moving through the music recognizable patterns of music from Africa the Orient and the West Indies gave the improvisation sudden peaks of excitement and the sense of continuity needed to hold the entire exercise together As the rhythms changed the geographical feel of the music changed as well and the effect was like tour of nations and cultures mixing and blending into one whole In piece of music like this Nexus creates such powerful mood that you feel almost hypnotized by the music As the music flows from one musician to another and back again youre caught up in something so strong and yet so subtle that its like druginduced high the music lifts you up and holds you suspended in the air DIFFERENT MOOI The second half of the concert began by creating an entirely different mood from the improvised work Ragtime collection of five pieces arranged for three xylophones and drummer illustrated the ensembies virtuoso skills on the instrument and their ability to interpret popular music as well as they interpret more srious and more dif ficult pieces The five ragtime pieces are adapted from tunes written for Xylophone and piano in the 19205 the music is light and lively as hap py and carefree as child playing game on summer day Nexus showed perfect timing and perfect control yet the music re mained playful and goodhumored Ragtime music makes no claims to be anything more than light entertainment Nexus added just the right touch of sparkl ing enthusiasm having fun with the music without making fun of it The final three works on the program ex plored traditional music from Africa and Mexico Rhodesian melody became the source for an extended improvisation on plucked instrument call mbira or thumb piano traditional Mexican tune known as La Bamba inspired jazzstyled iniprovisa tion on xylophones and three African pieces ended the concert with an often stun ning display of the groups intuitive sense of coordination and ensemble playing First North American release wonder why it took two years for the sixman British band to cross the Atlantic Since 1977 Sad afe has released two albums in Europe one of which was entitled Misplaced ideals The album distributed under that name in North America consists of selections from the two Euro pean recordings The British press has been quick to point out similarities between Sad afe and long established acts comparisons which although justified to some extent should not be used to categorize this band Sure iaul Youngs vocals have the same raw strength and tone of Mick Jagger But Sad afe does not do the itollingStones True Vic Emersons impcc cable key work bears flighty progressiveness similar to that of hick orea But Sad Tate does not do Return To Forever The musical influences are evident but the band has used these influences to build upon not to mimic As result Misplaced Ideals is an album that is exciting dynamic and suitably varied to avoid tonal staleness From the heavier rock tunes like Restless and iiere omc the llowns which include some finely executed jam sax lines by session man Lenni Zaksen Sad Tafe moves of fortiesst into the more melodic numbers such as Hungry Eyes and Black Rose The band also serves up healthy portion of blues on the time Feel Like by ing MISILAFEI IDEALS Sad afe and SI 1737 Ted Templcman obviously took great deal of care in pro ducing Minute By Minute
