sean finlay Bring back hanging As The Examiner said on Saturday the election is over and Bill Knowles has returned to these pages with his usual blend of smalltown Ontario prejudices and Ontario Tory divineright arrogance Knowles against whom have jousted several times in the past does have the right idea about capital punishment In his column Saturday he suggests the two FLQ types who kidnapped James Cross in 1970 and gave Pierre Trudeau the chance to play absolute dictator for few days should be hanged from the nearest light standard left to hang for few days and then fed to the fish Right on Bill The trouble with the capital punishment debate in this country is that Canadians are too nambypamby to say what they really think It takes bluntspeaking man like Bill Knowles to speak forcefully and directly and truthfully about capital punish merit Few Canadians will admit it but there is one reason and one reason only to have capital punishment revenge Hanging man or woman for crime never solved anything and anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that The threat of hanging wont of course lower the crime rate But we will get our revenge and well all feel better for it so for heavens sake lets bring back the rope What is the use of society gaining its revenge behind closr ed walls in the dead of night As deterrent that isnt much as revenge hell your maiden aunt could do better And is hanging suitable revenge of deterent Should not the convicted man or woman suffer as much as the victims relatives and friends After all whats the use of revenge if it isnt enjoyable Canadian courts and Canadian police are tangled in morass of laws Much time is spent now determining what degree of murder the accused should be charged with The definition of murder should be simplified Lets Try This Lets try the following the definition of murder should be simplified to causing the death directly or indirectly or any other person or persons make all murder punishable by death No more life sentences no more manslaughter charges no more paroled killers walking the streets the execution should be carried out in public in suitable stadium Admission should be charged to cover the cost of the trial and police investigation The execution should be carried live in color on the CBC national TV network since the CBC needs all the help it can get to boost ratings any friends and relatives of the victim should be given the opportunity if they wish of assisting in the execution hanging should be kept as the method of execu tion but drawing and quartering should be added Watching someone being drawn and quartered will make any potential murderers careless drivers and such think twice And drawing and quartering is great way to get the revenge message across The bleedingheart liberals have had their day in this country The result has been an unprecendented wave of violence with 35 or to people killed every weekend by cars alone Capital punishment is the only answer to the problem of violent death no matter how caused And if we go back to capital punishment lets have no halfhearted measures Lets do it properly Sean Finlay is managing editor of The Examiner
