Stayner Midland and other area it At the Barrie curling club entries have been asked to register by next Thursday so local roundrobin series can be played to decide the three rinks which will represent the Essa road club in this event for more than $2400 in rizes Harold Butch Bayd the we known ball pitcher was among the first to re ster locally His rink included Ted Leeman Bill Grant an Leo Belcourt all prominent in county sport for some years Bob Denney Scotty Kell and Clark were other skips to Sign up early Gary Maw John Johnston and Gerry Heels were listed with the Denney rink while Kell has Ed Skinner as vice Glen Adams and Ron Rinneard Shaw Fenske and Armstrong are with the Clark crew The competition is scheduled to start on Sunday Dec for both north and south sections with the top three rinks in each division taking part in playoffs at the Barrie rink Ar rangements also have been made for consolation series at the Barrie Country Club rink which is to be the scene of the presen tation banquet on March 26 Meantime the first jitney curling was started at the Essa road rink today with new members participating with the more experienced curlers Secretary Frank Hersey reports 747 curlers have signed up so far at the Barrie club which has the largest membership in the county There are still more to sign an the figure does not include junior players all of which in dicates one of the busiest seasons yet at this popular curling centre SIGN UP FOR SENIOR CURLING SERIES At the Orillia curling club Tom Caldwell has been asking senior curlers to sign up early in preparation for the Ontario Curling Associations coming competition for older curlers Local rinks in this event at Orillia are scheduled to start play next Saturday night in roundrobin to decide which two will represent the club in this provincial series The closing date for registration is next Thursday Barrie and other area clubs also are expected to com te for divisional honors in this event one of some 11 provincia cham pionship classes spensored by the Ontario Association Two of these championships went to county clubs last winter while good showings were made in some others Kingston foursome skipped by Jake Edwards won the senior class last winter Orillia ca tured the GovernorGenerals provincial title last February en Ed Luterbach and Larry Wills skipped the win ners Jerry Udell the wellknown county lea baseball pit cher and slugger played lead on the Luter ch rink which also included Jim Adam and Lyle Johnston Curling was new experience for Udell but he took to the game right away and is now an enthusiast Dave Cowan Bill Dickey and Gary McGillwray were the fine supporting players for Wills Midland curlers skipped by Russ Howard brought the Sims Trophy to the county in the Colts competition for curlers who havent played more than seven seasons with registered club With Howard were Jim Clark Linden Hurlbut and Ken Carstairs in this singlerink event An Elmvale rink skipped by Garry Turner won the divisional play in the British Consols and made good showing in the roundrobin for the provincial championship at Peterborough The ultimate winners were crew from the Dixie club of Mississau skipped by Joe Gurowski which defeated the Earle Morris rin of Ottawa in the final OTTAWA RINKS TANKARD CHAMPIONS The Silver Tankard doublerink competition is usually con sideered the major Ontario event This key event which dates back over century was won last winter by Ottawa rinks skip ped Bruce Delaney and the same Earle Morris almost guid Ottawa to the Consols as well Dave Merklinger Rick Ward and Don Reddick were with the championship Delaney rink while in front of Morris were such fine curlers as Randy Lanctot Ron Powell and Love Lord The Burden trophy went to Samia rinks skipped by Bill L0v sin and Bruce Culver the Lucas trophy to Ottawa and Dunker and Parkhill trophies to High Park rinks in Toronto Two other provincial championship series which have stirred special interest in curling circles in recent years were the Junior Tankard and Schoolboy series David Velanoff skipped the Highland club rink from London which captured the Junior Tankard last winter while the schoolboy title went to Victoria Park secondary school rink skipped by Ken Pearce With indications of more curlers than ever taking part in the new season just starting there is certain to be keen competition in all these championship events again The Silver Tankard hasnt been won by any county club since Orillia took the honors back 20 years ago which must surely mean its due here again BASEBALL ERA OF FABULOUS BABE RUTH Older baseball enthusiasts were stirred with memories of what they considered the games most colorful player of all time when they read of the death of the widow of the fabulous Babe Ruth the other day There was only one Babe Ruth Claire Ruth was quoted as insisting and most oldtime fans are likely to agree although the same news report said the Babes proudest home run records crumbled under the bats of later stars But what the report didnt say drew the comment of old timers George Herman Babe Ruth went up to the majors from the old Baltimore Orioles as pitcher and became the twirling ace of the Boston Red Sox It was not until he was in the majors for several years and sold to the New York Yankees that he was switched to the outfield so he could play everyday because of his exceptional slugging Soon afterward he set major league home run record of 59 and away back in 1929 topped that with an amazing 60 The lat ter has been surpassed by Hank Aaron in recent years along with the lifetime total but too often it hasnt been pointed out that the major league teams have been expanded and schedules lengthened in the meantime When Babe Ruth was blasting out circuit blows in his prime the American league had eight teams Ruths home run hitting ushered in new era for baseball drawing more spectators in that pretelevision era than ever before The 70000 seating capacity Yankee stadium was often referred to as the stadium which Babe Ruth built The home run achievements of Ruth had an influence on bail players everywhere and his fabulous $180000 season depressiontime salary was considered fantastic His tremen dous slugging was not only an inspiration to major league players but also to other professional clubs and amateur as well He was even held up as an example of achievement for Barrie players of the era as John Dobson Ken Walls or other local stars of the time may well recall Bob
