the nutrition is there if the students choose to accept it Beaver foods rovides cafeteria service in Barries high school The food service is run on profit basis and at no cost to the school boardmr Bonin said balanced lunches are offered to the students and are rotated daily The lunch costs about 60 cents and in cludes onethird of the average daily nutrient intake needed by teenager It comprises foods from the four nturition groups milk or milk products fruit and vegetables meat or meat substitues and cereal bread of pasta However student and ad ministration pressure had led Beaver to providing foods such as hamburgers and French fries Mr Bonin says students prefer these foods and the school principals sometimes prefer that the cafeteria offer them in order to keep the students from leaving the school for their lunch Its kind of case of which is worse the evils of poor nutri tion or the evils the kids could run into be eating outside school grounds However the school is pro moting balanced diets which would include the teenage staples of hamburgers and French fries Mr Bonin says there is really nothing wrong with French fries for nutrition as long as they arent eaten for three mealsaday For Nutrition Week Beaver is offering an incentive to students to buy nutritious meals By buying the planned balanced meals which could include hamburger salad and milk the students get chance to enter draw for 30 pop music records Mr Bonin says the response has been good and students seem to be eating the nutritious meals and enjoying them The students tastes for less nutritious foods seems to stem from social attitudes says Mr Bonin Nutrition is everybodys business he said Family meals seem to be going out the door with the onset of conve nience foods And when chil dren dont learn proper nutrilt tion at home they make no ef fort to buy nutritious foods at the schools Mr Bonin said the biggest group of buyers of the balanced meal at the cafeterias is the teachers As such they could set good example to the students but in most cafeterias teachers are served in separate line Kiddies rights speech topics Childrens rights and regnitive development will be the subject of
