time to plant bulbs By JEAN GARLIC Barrie Horticultural Society There are lots of spring bulbs still to be seen in the stores We do hope you remember that it is what you plant now that will give you that spring show Just where it will catch your eye in the border or near your door plant some Winter Aconite iEranthisi It has lovely light green leaf and yellow flower is dwarf and reminds you of buttercups Because it blooms when we in our climate are so hungry for sight of flower it is most desirable Dont forget some crocuses under your shrubs where they can bloom for years undis trubed Thionodoxa are early to grow and make nice splash of color in early spring Iris reticulata are beautiful and so easy to plant Spotted in your rockery there are also good Dont forget grape hyacinths both blue and white All these bulbs should be going on special sale in the supermarkets florists and nurseries soon to clear out their stock so do get some There is lots of time to plant tulips yet It was only last night the salvia and marigolds froze and no one wanted to destroy them while they were so beautiful to clean up lli BEDS Once you have pulled up or cut off all the old plants dig the beds and apply some super phosphate ravailable at 0p add some compost if you can and dig the bed lightly This will allow the motsture to sink in and the elements will break up the soil if you dont dig it finely Mulch any tender plants Mark any special plants with stake Tie any that need support from the wind Canterbury bells foxglove columbine glorias and daisys grown from seed this spring can be put in their permanent places now While we have snow one day the next will be lovely so dont put your garden tools away too soon There has been terrific growth this past few months so if some of your shrubs have got beyond bounds you had better trim them Always remember though that the current years growth is where your bloom is There are so many kinds of tulips do try to variety this year Purityflowered tulips are very pretty in the rockery or in bed of their own They are early also lilyflowered tulips are beautiful III beds borders or for cutting llflf ar the 1976 International
