Raceway program Credit Scots for curling By ED HARPER Chayt The curling season is starting and many people new to the game will be out on the ice this winter for the first time in the many curling rinks in the area hope that the following history of curling will help the newcomers in their knowledge of the game The Scots generally are credited with creating curling referred to in other years as Bowling on Ice because the stones then used in the game were round and holes in them and were thrown much like bowling balls The stones now are made with handle and by turning the stone as it is released it will curve to the right or left That is how the game got its name by the curl of the stone few historians suggest that curling originated in the Netherlands others trace it back to the dim years in Scan dinavian history But most of them elect Scotland where the sport existed before the 16th century In 1834 an organization which called itself the American Curling Club of Scotland was formed and proceeded to standardize the game This was supplanted on November 15th 1838 when the Grand Caledoniaii Curling Club was created and quickly became the dominating organization for the game in Scotland In 1842 after Queen Victoria of England visited the club and watched game the name was changed to the one by which it is known today The Royal Caledonian Curling Club At the time of its founding the Caledonian Association had 28 clubs in its membership In 1880 this increased to 500 now it is in the thousands The sport was introduced into Canada about 1807 and into the USA in the 1820s The Orchard Lake Club Pontiac Mich was the first club in the USA to devote itself ex clusively to curling The Scots and the Americans as well as the Dutch gave the sport considerable impetus through the next 50 years but Canada was apathetic for long time Now the entire situation is reversed The first international curling contest was in the winter of 190203 between Scotland and the USA the Americans winning The standard length of rink from hack to tee is 42 yards All stones must be circular in shape and no stone including the handle can weigh more than 50 pounds be more than 36 inches in circumference or higher than oneveighth of its cir cumference No stone can be changed during play In ancient times the stones were usually irregular squareedged affairs But the rounded stones made their ap pearance in 1800 and since then have come into universal use Americans and Canadians substituted iron for stone years ago when there was no limit as to weight The irons then ranged from 45 to 100 lbs Since stones have been stan dardized as to size Americans and Canadians ceased using iron and resumed using the stones most of which come from Scotland Curlers always carry brooms The brooms are vital to the game sweeping makes the ice faster and the sweepers sw ing into acton upon orders from the skip Some of the early Dominion of Canada Curling Champions were 1928 1929 1931 1934 the Strathcona Curling Club of Winnipeg In 1930 and 1932 the Granite Curling Club of Win nipeg In 1933 the Royal Club Edmonton In 1935 the Camp bell Rink of the Thistle Curling Club Hamilton This rink was comprised of Duncan Campbell Gordon Coates Donald Campbell and Gordon Campbell skip The first five winners of the GovernorGenerals Trophy Ontarioi were as follows St Marys 1896 Sarnia 1897 Lindsay 1898 Oshawa 1899 andOrillia 1900 The Ladies Silver Tankard was won for the first time by Toronto Queen City in 1914 hope that the above column has been interesting to you curlers Have
