be same despite gold record By MICHAEL LAWSON The Canadian Press Drastic changes already were in the works for Van couvcrbased pop group Sweeny lodd when its first single recor ding Roxy Roller started clim bing the record charts about five months ago The recording on the London label has since achieved gold status but Sweeney Todd never will be the same It all started whcn lead singer Nick Gilder 25 who also cowrote the groups material with guitarist Jim McCullough was offered contract with the Los Angeles label Chrysalis distributed in Canada by Capitol Records With the ex ception of McCullough Sweeney Todd was not invited to sign Gilder is reported to have taken about five months to de cide whether to stay with the bandthe current unit is about two years oldor move on to solo career At the time Roxy Roller made the charts we werent well known anywhere outside of British Columbia Gilder said in recent interview in To ronto There were going to have to be changes in the band and it was either make the changes and sort the production thing out or pursue ii solo career Starting all over again seemed like an incredible challenge and it excited me McCullough who worked with Gilder on all material on Sweeney Todds London album also was put under contract with Chrysalis He will be working on Gildcrs first solo album now in the planning stages in Los Angclcs Asked if there were hard feel ings as result of the changes in Sweeney Todd Gilder said it was likely It was an unusual situation because we had this very suc cessful record and wasnt con fident in the unit It was getting to the point where wed do show and wouldnt feel good about it afterwards like one should The unit left itself open to lot of criticism and when youre at the rofessional level you cant af ord that Everyone has got to be responsible and that wasnt happening Ironically as Gilder was speaking in his downtown hotel room Sweeney Todd was only blocks away at an awards pre sentation The group received the gold record plaque for Roxy Roller The Barrie Examiner Friday October l9767A JOHN CRAIG has 19 books published Is seeing psychiatrist NEW YORK AP Louise Lasser star of the television
