wwim aw KS WV COUNTY SPORTS Terriers hopes running high By BILL CURRAN Although George Maconachie isnt one to take anything for granted nothing would please him more than to see his Orillia Terriers capute the Allan cup for second time in the coming 197677 hockey season Maconachie fully realizes the Terriers will need to stren and he is seekin the necessaig talent But he also appreciates the value of leadership etermined teamsprin and need to acquire the driving force so essential win national cham pionships With the help of former Barrie players Corby Adams Jim Thompson and other newcomers he has high hopes that Dale Rolfe can carry the Terriers all the way But currently the team has to concentrate on the senior OHA league race due to open soon Although they reached the finals in 1970 and came close on other occasions Orillia Terriers were able to win the Allan cup only once and that was in 1973 Hockey fans in the Lake Couchiching centre still like to talk about the Canadian championship team led by Doug Kelcher which beat out St Bonifce Mohaws in the finals four games to one that memorable season Clair Alexander now tith Toronto Leafs was one of the scoring aces of that fine team which crushed their Manitoba op ponents by 12 to and to scores in onesided game Their only 055 was by hardf ought to margin Grant Moore Jim Keon Ron Clarke and Garry Vaughan were other leading scorers with that standout crew along with Mike Draper Gary Marsh Gary Milroy and Jim OBrien The goaltending was shared by Ernie Miller and JeanLouis Levasseur On the way to the finals the Terriers beat out Thunder Bay in the Eastern Canada championShip series in exciting fashion at Thunder Bay rink The team trailed two games to one at one stage only to come battling back to take two in row and take the series St Boniface defeated Spokane Jets four games to three in the west Terriers reached the Allan cup finals in 1970 and then lost to the same Jets Barrie Flyers finished well above the Terriers in the league race last season and went on to reach theAllan cup finals before losing out to Spolane Jets The Jets thus captured the Canadian championship trophy for the third time in seven years Barrie Flyers won the national title in 1974 beating out Cranbrook Royals in the finals then they lost out to Thunder Bay in 1975 and to the Jets last sprin Corby Adams they club captina led the Flyers when ey defeated Gatineau Nordiques three games to one in the eastern Canadian finals last season The attacking line of Phil Bran ston Paul Reagan and Don Pagnutti also was outstanding along with defence stalwarts Jack Smith and Steve Sly But this is another season and there has been quite change in playing personnel which should add to the innterest and ex citement for senior hockey followers Allan cup records show Spolane Jets were winners in 1970 1972 and 1976 Cambridge Hornets in 1971 Orillia in 1973 Barrie in 1974 and Thunder Bay in 1975 Flyers had the disadvantage of playing all four games in Spokane in the Allan cup finals last spring when Darryl Slys charges went down by scores of to to to and to The next Allan cup finals will be played in the east DEVER TIES SIMCOESIDE RECORD When Don Dever fired 68 score for 18 holes in winning the Jack Treloar memorial trophy event at Simcoeside recently he tied course record check of st scores at this 10yearold course showed that Jack Rayfiel former Shanty Bay golf champion chalked up 68 in winning the same tournament back four years ago Dever won the Treloar trophy two years ago with 73 score but last year finished fourth with 75 when Larry Ireland of Barrie cap tured the honors with 71 Dever however did re cord of 68 scored at Simcoeside last year in challenge match He also fied 32 for nine holes which was within one of the record set by golf pro Ross Leeder of Barrie at this course three years ago native of Edmonton Dever learned to play golf in the western city and he was won numerous competitions in and around Barrie since coming to this area including the Circle Pine title The late Roy Austin whose death at Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday was deeply mourned by golfin friends had score for 18 holes to his credit alon with 33 or nine He had caputred the Simcoeside club golf ti five years in row until replaced by Norm Joslin last year when he was unable to com pete for health reasons The senior championship tournament for older players from 50 years up is scheduled for Simcoeside tomorrow with Mel Broughton leading contender Jim Mitchell won the trophy last year GOLFERS PROTEST NEW ASSESSMENT While on the subject of golf many players at different Simcoe County courses as well as elsewhere have been signing petitions in protest of proposals of the provincial government to substantially boost taxes for golf courses under new market value assessments due to take effect in 1978 Although recognizing that property taxes have been steadily increasing despite all the emphasis iven to socalled restraint in government tax spending the go fraternity feels that the government simply isns consistent in making generous grants to help various recreational projects and then up the taxes on golf The clubswinging summer game is one of the most popular participant sports in the county but substantial hike in assessment and taxes could well mean an increase in fees which would discourage many from playing One petition said if the market value assessment of golf cour ses is introduced many courses will be forced to close The cost of golfing would be greatly increased at remaining courses it suggested in urging fiar method of taxation for golf courses which will allow the present courses to continue operation The proposed revision of golf course taxes is one of 15 tax reforms advanced for 1978 which have been stirring con siderable discussion and not little concern ghten GEORGE MILNER of the Barrie Flyers is an in terested observer as his ORILLIA Staff The word revenge is probably inap propriate but it took Corby Adams the Orillia Terrier only 13 minutes and 28 seconds to score his first goal against the Barrie Flyers in Ontario Hockey Association Senior league play The goal the first of the game came in an exhibition contest at the Orillia Communi ty Centre Friday won by the Terrierssl Adams sold to the Terriers this summer after 13 years with the Flyers took breakaway pass from defenceman Ron Clarke at the centre line and drilled hard shot to the lower left hand corner past goaltender Ron Patterson It was the only goal of the first period The 35yearold excaptain of the Flyers said in an interview Thursday that he thought last nights game might be just like practice Thats not ex actly how it turned out Adams was levelled by Doug Ferguson on his first shift of the game Midway through the se cond period he sat out two minutes for roughing with George Milner of the Flyers Milner seemed intent on entering dispute in the Flyer end that also involved Gary Lyte of Barrie and Don Raybould of Orillia In the third period Adams caught Flyer playingcoach Darryl Sly with an elbow and served another two minutes Adams and linemates Colin Gordon and Dale MacLeish formed an effective unit Friday for the Terriers But then again almost everything was clicking for the hometowners They got strong goaltending from newcomer Craig Hillick who kicked out 31 of 32 Flyer shots Club president George Maconachie had ex ressed con cern about the Ori lia goalten ding If Hillicks performance was typical he has nothing to worry about The yourg blueline corps of the Terriers was little loose at times but theyre aggressive and strong rushers Clarke former captain of the Oklahoma Blazers was par ticularly impressive Terrier coach Dale Rolfe played couple of shifts early in the first period taking roughing minor at the six minute mark but spent the balance of the contest behind the bench The Terrier forwards were tenacious inside the Flyer blueline and it paid off in goals goal by Milner at 741 of the second period assisted by Ken Knapton and Steve Sly tied the contest at but from thereon in it was all Terriers Barry Lutes on passes from Danny Lutes and Gordon enabled the Terriers to take 21 lead into the third period with his goal at 1522 Orillia broke it wide open ear ly in the third with two quick goals Gordon at 44 seconds and StanGrossat152 Rounding out the scoring was Danny Lutes at 1502 and Gor don again at 1524 Adams assisted on the final tally Terriers captain Dale MacLeish had two assists and left no doubt that hell be one of the leagues premier per formers this year It was hardhitting contest with 74 minutes in minors and majors being assessed The Flyers served 44 the Terriers 30 Steve Sly 0f Barrie was ejected midway through the third period after protesting call of interference against Adams little too strenously Fights included butting duel between Bob Pep ler of the
