ReuterWhen Czechoslovak film director Milos Forman won five Oscars this year for One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest the event has not reported in his own fgéisntry to which he has not returned since And precisely because he never returned his filmlike his earlier worksis not likely to be seen here The film industry like any other medium is strictly controlled by the overnment and in the front line of the eological strug As in most Communist countries Czechoslovakias film industry is free from financial problems as profit is not deter mining factor in the production policy But ideological constraints provide other limits and Czechoslovak films have little suc cess even at home where people line up to see American productions such as The Great Gatsby or The Sting Box office figures are not made public here but glance at central Pragues lines on Saturday night shows marked preference for Western productions FLOURISIIED IN 60s The Czechoslovak cinema one of the oldest in Europe gained world recognition in the mid19605 with directors like Forman Jiri Menzel Closely Watched Trains and Vera Chytilova The Little Daisies It was hit by the political events of 1968 like every other sector of the cultural life here and the normalization policy still is very mucha reality The official truth nowadays is that former party leader Alexander Dubceks attempt at socialism lith human face was in fact counterrevolution in the making and that the Russianled invasion which put an end to it was fratcmal gesture from fellow Socialist countries Anyone who does not agree with that simp ly does not make films The current national production ranges from musicals to thrillers and includes an unusual proportion of war and historic films DIRECTORS EMIURAIEI Much of the talent has gone as many direc statecontrolled in dustry but with no great success so far Others are simply idle They have become nonpersons like many other artists and intellectuals who because they refuse to give allegiance to the new regime sim ly are not allowed to work Even those manage to placate the governmentcontrolled cinema establish ment totally controlled by party dominated commission can still hit the snags of or thodoxy An example of this was the misadventure of Jaromir Jireess latest picture And Please Greet The Skylarks which according to the few people who saw it is one of the best of the numerous pictures celebrating the fight of the Czech and Slovak people against the Nazi oc cupation Based on the true story of young Mora vian schoolgirl who was beheaded by the Nazis the film told of her ordeal by making sensitive use of the letters 14yearold Maria Kuderikova wrote from her prison STUCK TO FACTS The film has practically not been shown apparently because the director kept strictly to the facts and described the young martyr as she really was patriot and Roman Catholic In practically all other films on the resistance against Nazi rule the martyrs are Communists The industry has also joined the ideological battle of the normalization policy with few films illustrating the current official line on the 1968 events The only big boxoffice success in recent years has been lively comedy called Put It In The Computer Joachim which over three years had 28million attendance according to unofficial sources Another film went over the two million mark comedy called How to Drown Dr Mracek The Czechoslovak ublic is also treated to some capitalist pr uctions for which the selection criteria often remain mystery to foreign observers They include Britains ur Miss Fred as well as Frances The
