Qorts wheel Sixday riders toughest of all By El HARPER Chay Everyonel meet seems to be caught up in Grey Cup fever and most people talk to agree that football is the most physical and dangerous of sports must agree with this assessment of todays football games But still believe that the old sixday bicycle races of the 1930s in which competed were more physical and more dangerous also believe that racers had to be in bet ti condition to compete Imagine if you can board track built in an arena such as Maple Leaf Gardens with the banked ends built to an angle of 55 degrees rider had to ride at speed of at least 20 miles an hour to stay on the steep turns With field of 20 riders making up 10 teams it got pretty crowded at times especially when there was jam on the examiner Frlday Nov 24 1978 CAHA gets tough in dispute OTTAWA CP The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association CAHA moved today to block the World Hockey Association 18game European series scheduled for early next year after talks concerning the signing of eight underage juniors broke down CAHA president Gordon Renwick officially notified the International Ice Hockey Federa tion IIHF the world governing body that the WHA was not in good standing with the CAHA Now it up to them Renwick said dont know how long the process takes IIHF bylaws state that all international games between members need permission from the national federation which in this case is the CAHA Earlier this month the WHA had agreed to downpayment of $170000 for the juniors The WHA also agreed to pay $150000 by July1979 if the players remain in the WHA followmg the National Hockey Leagues amateur draft in June DROP CLAIM But on Monday the WHA insisted that the CAHA drop claim to $150000 insurance bond it put up in 1977 as guarantee against signing juniors But the bond issue was totally separate issue and the WHA agreed to that said Ed Chenowyth executive director of the Canadian Ma um or Junior Hocke rella org anization League junior hockeys That was decided during closed meetings in Ottawa two weeks ago between Sport Minister Iona Campa WHA and Hockey Canada She Campagnolo confirmed that to me by phone he added We are totally resigned to the fact that were going to get this thing over with one way or anotherand were not going jam was the real thrill most fans got out of the six miles an hour and the crowd was usually on its feet riders jam was apt to occur at anytime night or day and many times with only handful of spectators or only the cleaners in the building shift for the partner was from seven till ten in the morning twoman team would ride approximately 2500 miles during the six days Spills were frequent and it was impossi ble to miss them since nearly all the field would be involved and would end up in pile of bodies and bicycles have been connected with sports since the early 1930s and the toughest gamest man have ever known was bicy cle rider by the name of Reggie McNamara Reggie rode sixday races until he was 53 years of age He was in more spills than any other rider and earned the name The Iron Man He had his collarbone broken 13 times his jaw broken twice his skull fractured and many many more injuries ever lived compared with Reggie for gamencss and stamina Reggie was never known to have been helped to his feet or carried off the track because of crashes Invaiiably on regaining consciousness after some particularly bad fall which he had been thrown And in spite of all the injuries that he received he usually finished the races he entered rider always trying to break into the game it meant that most riders even though they were injured would continue as long as they could usually get out there without medical attention He once kept track of the medical supplies used in the first three days of sixvday race They amounted to 160 yards of adhesive tape six gallons of witch hazel three gallons of olive oil and two dozen bottles of iodine of petrogen used for sprains and bruises Track physicians agree the hardicst athletes in any era of sport were sixday riders and that falls that could kill an ordinary man or put him in hospital for several weeks were merely incidental in the life of six day racer So comparing the danger and physical aspects of football to sixday bicycle racing would have to say that bicycle racing was the tougher Grey Cup fun
