Gene Autry whod already invented the singing cowboy Or rather Autry was the screens first singing cowboy if one doesnt count John Wayne To be precise it was Herb Yates boss at Mascot Pictures later Republic who got the nation that crooner on horseback would be money in the bank so he had young ac tor fresh off the USC football team mouth lyrics at full trot while dubbed voice carried the tune However the young actor Wayne was balkier than his horse and said he felt like fool so he was replaced by another young actor named Gene Autry who could sing with his own voice while riding Waynes good friend of mine Autry said the other day during an interview at the hotel he owns in Palm Springs and hes often told me If Id been able to sing would have been tle firstsinging cowboy But tell him that it wasnt my singing that got me the ti tle ltwas my fine acting FOUR MEDIA STAR star of four media radio movies records and television Autry won the first Gold Record for That SilverHaired Daddy of Mine when his piblicist the late Bev Bamett thought up the award Id made the record in 1930 butI didnt get the award until 1934 Autry said Which was when it occurred to Barnett that the recognition would be newsworthy Autry Texan whod worked as railroad telegrapher in Oklahoma became radio singer and recording artist in 1925 singing on with Columbia Records On screen from 1934 through 1954 he was the No Western star at the box office from 1937 through 1942 when he went into the US Army Air Force as flight officer From 1947 through 154 the year he retired from the screen he placed second in Melody Trail has reminisced that he had his fan mail brought to him on loca tion and after days work painstakingly answered every letter New Tucker album gives fans blast By MICHAEL LAWSON The Canadian Press As the title of Tanya Tuckers new albumTNTwould sug gest fans had better prepare themselves for blast As the cover photo would indicate fans can expect drastic change No misleading packaging hereyou see it all before you hear it And the dust settles in the aftershock all that remains of the former Tanya Tucker is her fan club still based in the music worlds country and western capital Nashville Tenn With the release of TNT Tucker has pulled up her musi cal roots to join the ranks of rock rollers Its drastic change that may cost her some fans but itsa gamble she takes with styleand some imlt peccable direction Tanya has shelved her for mer image Check out your earlier Tucker albums against TNT Gone is the girl next door with hint of pout replaced by raunchy blonde in clothes that fit like an extra layer of skin Gone are the hurting hamio ï¬les of Almost Persuaded and Guess Ill Have To Love Him Some More replaced by high energy sounds like those in the Buddy Holly hit Not Fade Away and the Elvis Presley standard Heartbreak Hotel Tanya Tucker adapts to rock music well and from her cur rent album one gets the imprcsa sion that she will stay with the format But Whether Tucker purists acA oept the latest offering remains to be seen But for listeners in general TNT is no bomb Neil Youngs cover version of the ballad Four Stmng Winds is not the only bright spot on his new album but it certainly must rate as one of the feature attractions Four Strong Winds has been done by scores of artists since an Tyson penned it about 15 years ago but as Young shows on the album Comes Time the song can never be done too many times Its one of those rare tunes that is almost impos sible to record badly Torontoborn Young handles it with the reverence due great Canadian folksoiig performing against beautiful backup vocals accoustic guitars and sad sweet fiddlc accompan imcnt Surely Tyson will forgive Young for rearranging the lyric order dropping the standard opening chorus to begin with the words Think Ill go out to Alberta The reworking tilk nothing from the ballad itself anti es tablishcs from thc start the na tjonality of the tune for the heir efil of Youngs worldwide fol lowing Young has always bccn adcpt at varying his style to appeal to most musical tastes bridging softrock with country or folk in Comes Time he forgets no one The album is largcly made up of soft ballads Needless to say Autrys mail finally became so voluminous that he had to give up answer ing each letter himself But he said during the in terview still answer lot of it If letter needs answering answer it myself MODERN WESTERNS Of modem Westerns starring the likes of Charles Bromon and Clint Eastwood Autry judged Evidently somebody likes them but we couldnt have gotten away with some of the stuff they do Some of their scenes are quite brutal Though Autry sometimes had double jump off cliff for trim leap from one galloping horse to another he did his own fight scenes and remembers one with Hugh Brian then kid jost out of the Marines as one of the longest His horse was always callul Champion but three horses played the role The original died in 1944 while Autry was in the Air Force He rode another in postwar features and third in It halfhour episodes for CBS Autry composed and record ed Here Comes Santa Claus which has become Christmas classic but it only sold five million he said while another song he recorded Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer sold It million and was his biggest hit Autry last sang professional 1y four or five years ago but said he doesnt have time for performing now what with his ownership of six radio stations two television stations hotel ranch and baseball club However he has taken time recently to work on documch tary The Singing oulmys
