works by 19th century composers and proved that while Romantic music may have popular ap peat it becomes monotonous when the orchestra lacks the polish and the passion to pro ject the drama of the music ef fectively Still there is much to admire in the symphonys work Arthur Burgin conductor of the Huronia Symphony exercises control and discipline over his musicians his interpretations may lack excitement and brilliance but they seem well suited to the capabilities of the orchestra The essentials of timing coordination and balance were evident throughout the concert Thomas Overture to Ray mond the first piece in the con cert neatly illustrated the on chestras strengths and weaknesses The opening was strong and confident the rhythm secure and full or chestral passages well balanced and wellplayed But when the emphasis shifted to the woodwinds or the violins the music seemed to shrink and lose confidence The violins the backbone of any orchestra were simply not strong and precise choice for the symphony and proved to be just beyond the grasp ot the musicians The first move merit held together well par ticularly iii the full orchestral passages but by the middle of the second and final move ment the orchestra had lost its drive and momentum Sustain ing interest in the music is the key to any successful per formance and the liiironia Symphony altered badly by not
