think it is has played Shakespeare which most per ple dont remember And once he played an Indian hief ochise of the Apaches and everybody seems to remember that particular role It was in fact the role that established Mike Ansara in the public consciousness Ansara who is Of Lebanese descent was terrific Cochise in the longago series lIroken Ar row And then in series callA ed Law of the Plainsman he played lawyer educated at Harvard who also happened to beanlndian People says Mike thought could only play In dians Where was it written that couldnt play cowboys Professionally speaking it was an image that he had to break and he did And now the years having passed there is Michael Ansara going the In dian route once more People say to me Mikc what are you doing playing an Indian again Ansara says tell them that already broke the image so can play Indians again You want me to play tochise Ill play ochise again Fortunately play In dians quite well Im also proud that my ochise cracked the stereotype of how lndiaris should be played with grunts and pidgin English IIASSK FIGURE think of the Indian as classic figure of tragedy play the Indian as would figure of tragedy in Shakespeare as might play Othello or Iago or Macbeth or laudius or yes llamlet himself One doesnt have to stretch the imagination very hard to see the similarities At one time Mike Ansara prepared oneman theater act of authentic speeches once given by Indians among them the famous shall fight no Tnore forever speech of Chief Joseph of the Nev lerce There were tremen dous depth and honor in those speeches not too different from Shakespeare or Greek tragedy The Indian that Ansara now plays is known as Lone Beaver and he appears in the first five episodes of Centennial Nltts 2trhour adaptation of the James Michener novel The novel typically Michener in its sweep and dimension dwells on olorado It was filmed there With Michener on hand for several days There was this one cold rainy day Ansara says and we talked great deal between takes lim Michener and me When he first saw me Michener said the casting was perfect You look exactly like the pieturel had in my mind when started writing Iini Michencr said to me was of course pleased lNIthillII Ansara was intrigued by Micheners personality Michener is gentle man deeply intellectual and yet almost humble lie is most refreshing for man of such fame There is no arrogance in him We are both married to Japanese women This set up bond between us and we went to dinner few times with our wives We were all so very com pat ible together James Michener Ansara went on is like the best the brightest professor you ever ha in school who was also the best storyteller youve ever known He actually was pro fessor in Colorado but his feel iiig toward his subject doesnt seem at all professonial He has fondness for detail his books and his conversa tion are full of detail but its always interesting fascinating compelling detail that enlarges on the story he is telling lie is never poiiderous Hes plea sant man He has humor He tells jokes lles easy to like nice to be around was proud to become his friend Had you read his books asked Ansara liesitatwl Well this is what told him when we first met said lve read your books Mr Miehener What didnt exactly tell him was that hadnt read entennial had read most of his books all the way back to South Pacific and Hawaii enjoyed them all but somehow enten nial had slipped by me When got the role was too busy preparing to go to Colorado to read it But will will SKIING The Inside Track by PeterMiInovan WHAT KIND OF XC SKIS Dear Peter keep getting contusing advice on what should buy in Cross Country Skis Should buy skis that are waxed or should they be woxless skis lam 20 years old and like to participate in lots OI Sports Sincerely Grant Dear Grant Woxless Skis come In many forms strips OI Mohair or synthetic fibre step grooves cut crosswme into the ski or lishscole like patterns on the base material All OI these woxless bases are designed to dig into the track when you weight one foot and kick downward and back The advantage of waxless Skis is that you never have to wax your skis The disadvantage of woxless skis is that they are not the best In all Conditions The Mohairs dont work well in powder snow and Ice up In temperatures that fluctuate around the treezing pomt The Stop and Fishscale skis work better in powdei snow but dont catch well on icy tracks Woxoble hoses are mode of wood treated and or coated wood or plastic Synthetic boos Waxable skis have the ad vantage that when correctly waxed they porlorm best in all conditions The disadvantage OI waxable skis is that sometimes you wax InCOIrectly and the skis don work their best As you on see the chaice is somewhat oi tossup Generally because waxed skis have the potential to pertorm the best most people choose woxable ski This IS especially tion IOI young sporty SthIS like yourself Regards Pete WOOD 0R FIBERGLASS Decr Peter People have suggested that should Start Skiing on wooden skis DO you agree Signed Laurie Dear Laurie Two major kinds of skis are wood and fiberglass There are also two basic criterions for beginners Skis Durability Ease OI use Wood skis Le those in which we use wood as the principal strengthening Component have the disadvantage that they are breakable Synthetic skis constructed with FRP fiberglass reinforced plastic are almost unbreakable And tor this reason one generally warranted by the manufacturer against breakage True wood skis with wood bases of hickory or birch have the traditional advantage that on cold dry snow they will both grip and glide even with little or no wax However waxing of wood bases requires somewhat messy preparation procedure Regards Pete Any
