Argos comedy By El HARPER Chay The Toronto Argonauts are through for the season and dont believe there is anyone sorry to see it Sundays game in Hamilton had to be one of the all time great comedies as each team tried to surpass the other in the number of mistakes they could make Even the officials tried to get into the act with one bad call after the other As bad as the officiating was it didnt compare with that of the DartmouthCornell game of November 16 1940 though the situation at the end of the game was very similar In that case Cornell scored touchdown in the last seconds of the game and were declared the winners 73 For the first time in football history films taken during the game were instrumental in reversing that decision two days later Dartmouth were awarded the game by score of 1H and Cornells unbeaten streak ended at 18 What happened was that through referees mistake Cor nell was given an extra down fifth down with just three seconds to play They cashed in on the gift and the game was theirs Everyone in the stands in the press box and especially on the Dartmouth Bench was aware of the error but unable to do anything about the referees decision Game films taken by Cornell showed that with one minute to play and Dartmouth leading 30 Cornell drove to the yard line On first down Mort Landsberg ran for three yards Mak ing it second down with three yards to go for touchdown and 15 seconds left to play On the next play Walt School went over the guard for two yards The ball was placed on the 0neyard line and Cornell had two chances to put it over with 20 seconds remaining Cornell huddled quickly and chose Landsberg to run He was stopped 10 inches short of the goal line Cornell had fourth down with ten seconds left Coach Carl Snavely of Cornell sent in substitute to stop the clock but the move backfired since Cornell had used all its timeouts There would not have been penalty under to days rules since the unlimited substitution rule does not re quire timeout during playerchange Cornell was penalized however and the ball was moved back almost to the yard line Quarterback School faded back into the end zone for for ward pass but there were no Cornell receivers free Fullback Ray Ilall of Dartmouth was there and could have easily iii tercepted the ball but chose to knock it down and as far as Hall was concerned it was now Dartinoutlis ball With three seconds showing on the clock the confusion began Referee Red Fricsell took the ball and started for the Zn yard line the point at which Dartmouth should have taken possession of the ball However the head liiiesinan in formed Itiscll of Cornell offside This should have been technicality as Dartmouth would have refused the penalty Inexplicahl Itricscll took the ball and placed it back on the ti£ill llllt and signalled fourth down for Cornell As fans sat in stunned silence Cornell lined up for the fifth down atid this time Schools pass was perfect llalfback ltill Murphy made the catch in the end one put ting orncll ahcad the extra point made it TZt Dartmouth protested and the day follow ing the game Fricsell reviewed the motion pictures and the gann charts In report to the Commissioner of the IIastcrn lnter collegiate Athletic ssociation he admitted his error and ab solved ttii othct officials from blame torncll in gciitleinanly gcstiirc relinquished claim to thc victory The onl possible explanation for riitistlis error was that he thought that the liticsiiian had called both teams offside This would have nullified the play and Itriesclls call would have been the correct one However ITltstll chose to admit the mistake was his alone though it is still unclear and in comprehcnsiblc why none of the other three officials qucs tioned Fricsclls decision sports
