and league actingpreSident Jerry Mercer couldnt be ha ier it was thcpgigh point of the season he said once the four division championship concluded The weekend was fabulous Mercers only regret is that more young soccer players lidnt sign up to play this year Registration hovered around the 600 player mark down slightly frotn last year We raised our fees slightly this yearn maybe that put some people off btit think it was still pretty good deal The $15 deal included uniform team pictures and full ason of games The fee will remain the same next yearunless the ex ecutive for 1979 decides to raise them again but Mercer thinks that is unlikely The league encountered its share of political troubles this year president John James resigned over disagreement with the rest of the executive He wanted it known that he resigned voluntarily Mercer said Jim Spruce first vicepresident at the beginning of the vcai was forced to step down due to ill health leaving Mercer tostep into the head mans spot He admits his discomfort in the position because his background doesnt include soccer experiencelle has managed minor ieaguers before and feels his strength lies in administration lm more of chairman can sit down with people and organize but as far as coaching goes dont have the knowledge of the game Mercer knows how to enjoy the excitement of close coin petition however and the the coaching staff Mercer said admit ting that Optimists was his responsibility in the beginning before coach George Ruzylo came on the scene to rebuild them Mercer may not be an experiencmi soccer coach but he is devout fan and he sees future for the game in North America think it will grow its clean sport and think it suits the taiiadian temperament its fabulous exercise its physical non violent for the most part and it doesnt cost much November will see the league meet to discuss the past season and possible changes to help the sport grow in Bar rie Mercer is reluctant to outline any changes yet he wants to leave that for the new echutive but he does want to help the associaton reorganizc its constitution to help clarify matters for the future indoor soccer will probably start
