Preserving farmland discussed by McCague By GEORGE McCAGUE MPP Dufferin Simcoe Although the Legislature is not IS session until October 25th the job of governing this provmce never stops Neither does the Govemments con tinual attempts to do so fairly considering the views of as many people as possible myself have just sent out thousand questionnaires seek ing public opinion the preser vation of good agricultural land sent only thousand because thought might get higher percentage of returns if sent the uestionnaire to handpicked ist of pe0ple who are familiar with the subject However if you dont receive one feel free to contact my of fice We have extra copies for anyone interested in voicing their opinion The responses get will be divided into four different residential categories so that rural and urban opinions can be identified While am sure that no one is opposed to saving our rich farmland know that there are many different ap proaches to dealing with the issue and many reasons for these approaches TEN MEETINGS Right now the ministry of agriculture and food has its ear to the ground too Agriculture Minister Bill Newman has announced series of 10 meetings to be held in various areas of the pro vince which will record the views of those in the farming community concerning farm in come stablilization These opinions will prove im portant in the days that lie ahead for as you may re member from the close of the Legislature in June the government is bringing in its new farm imcome stabilization program before the end of Oc tober In the Words of Bill Newman Probably the best way to ensure that farmers keep working their land is to create good economic lcimate for farming That is what our program will aim to do This immediacy means that the Government does not have very long to consider the input that will be received Because of this time factor all 10 meetings have been scheduled for the same night Nonday Oc tober They will be charied by area coordinators of the exten sion branch of the ministry who will invite all questions from th audience and actually direct some of them to Bill Newman himself Apparently the ministry of agriculture has arranged to have conference telephone call placed simultaneously to all meetings to that the minister can briefly address them all Then he will also be able to answer some questions form those people attending AWAY ON TRIP had planned to attend the meeting in Flesherton but un fortunately will be overseas as member of the select commit tee on highway safety The results of these meetings EDENVALE carefully assessed and taked into consideration when the farm income stabilization legislation is being drafted Mr Newman has already spoken with representatives of com modity marketing boards and provincial agricultural organizations It is easy to see just how im portant the government feels that the subject of agriculture is to the province And its not just the rural MPPs who are showing concern citydwellers realize that their standard of living the very fOod that they eat is directly influenced by the state of affairs in the farm ing community No one wants to pay higher prices than they have to By assuring farmers of he ing hand during times of nee we are also attempting to ensure that higher costs will not be passed along to consumers strong agricultural base in Ontario is not only essential to the province but to the whole country Lets keep it that way l6The Barrie Examiner Thursday Sept 30 I976 Fall project started By LOUISE WANLESS ELMVALE The New Flos +H Homemaking Club
