nsa ti on pmgram Ford owners accept comp MONTREAL CP The five Ontario Ford owners who started the class action for $371 million damages in Ontario Su preme Court last April ac cepted on Friday the com pensation rogram of Ford Motor Coo Canada Ltd The program made public Friday provides for max imum compensation of $300 for corrosion damage primarily caused by heavy road setting Jeffrey Lyons Toronto lawyer for the Ontario owners called the settlement the greatest legal victory in Canadian consumer history It shows the man in the street with just case can take on one of the biggest corpo rations in the country and still win satisfaction Mr Lyons said he estimates the compensation program will affect as many as 200000 cars and cost Ford between $30 mil lion and $50 million However Ford President Roy Bennett said he expects the owners of 6000 cars will come forward and the compensation program will cost the company less than $1 million The Automobile Protection Association APA said it will monitor the compensation pro am If the program is not ef ective the APA will withdraw its endorsement endorse the principle of getting some money to people right away said APA Presi dent Phil Edmonston on Friday But if people do get an un just compensation from Ford we want them to contact us and well bring the case before Ford again Mr Bennett said Owners ap plying under the plan would ave to sign form releasing the company from liability un der proposals of class actions Mr Edmonston said con sumers who refuse the plan are free to go to small claims court or initiate their OWn actions The Montrealbased associ ation headed campaign in the past six months which has re sulted in suits totalling $400 million against Ford Whether the number of appli cants is 6000 or 200000 Ford is giving them less than three months to make appointments to have their cars examined by both dealer and company representatives Further all appointments must be made through its Oak ville Ont head office ORIGINAL OWNERS ONLY Only the original owners the first $200 for damages on 1974 models and $100 more for each year before 1974 back to 1970 for maximum deductible of $600 The company also announced new threeyear warranty which applies to 1977 models built in North America cov ering parts damaged by corro qualify for payments and they must pay compensation sion Parts will be repaired or Miller an nounced 1976 Ontario hospital budgets Friday which gave the institutions $211 million more than last year He told news conference health spendin this year will be about $17 bi lion up 134 per cent from 1975 He said the widespread com laints by hospitals of cuts re erred to reductions in amounts the hospitals had requested from government not in actual spending He said only two hospitals will receive less this yearthe Riverview unit of Windsor Western Hospital which is cut ting back to close and the res ratory disease unit of Chedore General Hospital in Hamilton where there has been some pro gram changes Mr Miller said the $211mil lion increase comes des ite cutbacks bed closures staf re ductions and some hospital closings CITES PUBLIC DEMAND He said hospitals are willing to cooperate with the restraint measures in principle but com plain of increasing public de mand on their services without comparable increases in gov ernment funds The minister said the govern ment earlier expected $482 million saving from the re straint measures but that sav ing has been reduced to an esti mated $204 million by criors in calculations and court ruling on the closing
