Bowl presented the trophy ExaminerPhoto Viking discovers ice atMarsnorth pole PASADENA Calif AP Viking 2s discovery of frozen water at the north pole of Mars raises the possibility that some form of life may be locked be neath the icy surface scientists say Crofton Farmer an atmos pheric scientist at the Jet Pro pulsion Laboratory here said the discovery announced Wed nesday constitutes another shred of evidence that condi tions on the red planet may on ce have been suitable forlife As result he said future searches for traces of Martian life may turn to the planets north pole The discovery by Viking 2s orbiter counters theories that Mars polar regions are com posed mostly of frozen carbon dioxide gas with only traces of water Water is generally con sidered basic ingredient for the evolution of life think this shows much stronger possibility for past life than for present life said Far mer think future tests will now hold more significance in detailed studies of the polar regions Viking 2s orbiter discovered water by using an atmospheric spectrometer to measure the absorption of infrared light by molecules at the planets north pole Farmer said Tobias Owen an astronomy professor said the presence of frozen water at the Martian north pole may mean that or ganic moleculesthe building blocks of lifeor actual life for ms are frozen in the Martian icecaps much like on earth where we have dug prehistoric creatures out of the ice Farmer said he believes that great quantities of ice were melted by volcanoes erupting sometime in Mars past send ing rivers cascading across the planets surface cutting wide channels From there water probably was absorbed into the Martian soil where it is now locked in permafrost Most of the water that dissipated into the air probably condensed at the nor th pole while the rest boiled off into space he speculated Farmer said this theory is supported by the discovery by Viking 2s lander of the rare gases krypton and xenon They indicate that the Martian at mosphere was once dense enough for water to flow on the surface But whether that was 100 million years ago or three bil lion theres just no way of tell ing yet said Owen who super vised the raregas test He said that question should be answered by Viking mission geologists sometime in Novem ber Both Farmer and Owen agreed that the findings may turn the search for life on Mars from the desolate lower lati tudes to the planets polar re gions The Viking lander is con ducting tests of Martian soil for possible traces of organic com pounds that might indicate the presence of life Farmer said the amount of water frozen at the Martian north pole added to the amount believed to be trapped under ground in subsoil permafrost is proportional to the amount of water on earth Earth has 10 times more water than Mars but is about 10 times larger Farmer said the apparent growth of the Martian icecaps each winter as viewed from earth and orbiting satellites probably is due mostly to frozen carbon dioxide During the win ter frozen carbon dioxide spreads from the watericecap across the planet in thin sheet then recedes dramati cally as summer approaches The watericecap itself appar ently fluctuates very little if at all Controls act of courage on behalf of government KITCHENER Ont CP Implementation of wage and price controls was an act of po litical
